Unreal Development Kit

UDN - Three - DevelopmentKitGettingStarted

It would seem Epic has made their Unreal3 engine into a self-contained game development kit. Physics, modeling, maps, textures, materials, scripting, all right there, ready to be compiled into something.

I've been futzing around with the level creator. Fairly nice stuff. A bit wonky, but the interface is more or less intuitive once you read the basic tutorials.

Is there any way you can share what you're doing? Even if only screencaps. I'm curious how this process works.

Well, I'm doing newbie newbsauce type stuff right now. I learn by doing, so I'm doing what I want to do right then and there, so it's a bit spotty.

so for instance, the first screenshot shows Speedtree 5 modeling wind on a tree I built within it.

The second screen shows the UnrealEd editor, which has it's own quirks. For instance, I can apparently move the brushes (brushes = prims, basically) on the XYZ views, and have it not do it on the actual 3d view. very weird.

The final screenshot shows the in-editor "game world", meaning once your map is finished compiling (adding lights, AI paths, etc), it's popped into the engine for you to walk around and see what you can do.

...actually I'll get back to the last screenshot, it just crashed doing a texture alignment.

Yep, it's an awesome engine. It's only for non-commercial work though. If you make over 5k with what you make Epic wants 25%. That's still very reasonable IMO but something to consider when choosing an engine for an indie project.

"Well, then," the Cat went on, "you see, a dog growls when it's angry, and wags its tail when it's pleased. Now I growl when I'm pleased, and wag my tail when I'm angry. Therefore I'm mad."

"I call it purring, not growling," said Alice.

"Call it what you like," said the Cat.

What I cannot find on the UDK websites is what do you do once you have built a game/world with the kit? How do you deploy your creation?

Can you host it on a server and have friends log-in to play (then what about a viewer?). Are there any server/client mechanisms?

As the entire Unreal engine is predicated on the client/server model, I assume it's a given.
