Blue Mars Load Test - Sunday

There will be a Blue Mars Meet & Greet, which will double as a load test, on Sunday, Oct 4th, 2009, at 20:00 (8pm) GMT, in Shade City.

Come and meet everyone, and lets see just how many we can cram into a single City. You might want to have your screen statistics switched on too, to see the fps as the City fills up.

See you there,

Rock

Won't be able to be there.

Hope some folks can post and let me know how it went. I'm seriously interested in the numbers and performance.

I don't think we can tell, that info is not in the client (and the avatar draw distance is only 20m), but several AR people will be there, and I am hoping for a number from them.

The place is all but empty. Somebody said it is in an hour so I can only presume that means at 9pm GMT.

I couldn't get it to work at all on my computer but it took so long to download it, I'd have missed it anyway. Four hours. *head desk* Gah. I'm glad the SL client doesn't take that long.

The reason the download is so big, is you are downloading several entire cities along with the client software. The binary is 26 MB, which is comparable to the SL install package. The game data is 1.24 GB. They wont be able to keep that up for long. Some method of downloading cities as you need them will be required, or the install package will get too big. The problem about running it at all might be due to your graphics card, what do you have installed? The minimums for Blue Mars are much higher than SL. The Crytek game engine they are using is very leading edge, and takes a high end card to run.

I counted about 35 avatars in the Shade City waterfront deck. No noticeable lag (I get about 4 fps, but that's due to not having a top end video card). System (Win XP + Blue Mars) was eating about 1.3 GB memory and my Core2Duo 2.4GHz was running around 55% load. Bandwidth was steady at around 75kbps.

Took a couple of snapshots. The second one we asked people to all talk at once to see what would happen. Chat bubbles suck, they overlap, and you cant see what people are saying behind you. There appears to be a 300 character limit or so per entry. The text chat history cant be resized or moved, that will need some work. It also is an un-clickable area even when closed (acts like still open, and you cant click on stuff in that corner) No chat logs either that anyone could find.

Lots of the people there were also in SL. Oh, and we all look alike, cause there is very limited avatar editing so far.

Nothing happened to GMT. You just forgot about summer time. Right now the UK is GMT+1.

Articles and pics on the 1st Meet & Greet are here and here.

I saw around 42 avatars in my draw-distance, but I was beside the sea. Tiffany, who went near to the middle of the Meet area counted over 50. I have an aged Pentium 4, and my fps went from 15fps down to 3.5fps when around 10 had arrived, but never went lower even when 40 were there. One guy said he had 50fps on his machine (gonna get one of them for Christmas!) and others quoted fps in between.

Tiffany said she would try to get the concurrency logs for the Meet and Greet when the AR offices opened on Monday. I shall post them when I get them.
