Ducking out of hiatus for a moment.

"Note: If you have installation trouble, temporarily turn off your antivirus software."

Hah hah hah. No.

Looks like someone needs to learn how to write a web installer.

Bye!

I simply don't have the mental stamina to tackle another virtual project and all the baggage associated with another round of anonymous accounts.

This is a problem for Crysis Wars too. I know cos it happened to me installing Crysis Wars. That was a huge headache. I think it was a conflict between its copyprotection and my antivirus. There is no copy protection in the Blue Mars software, obviously, as it was meant to be distributed for free.

The Blue Mars installer has been fine for me with the same antivirus software. The biggest installation issue has been a bug when you install the developer tools before the regular client installation.

"I call it purring, not growling," said Alice.

"Call it what you like," said the Cat.

Firewalls can cause trouble with any web installer that is contacting the internet for downloading. Make sure that it allows the Blue Mars installer, and it should function fine.

It's not the firewall -- I hit "add to trusted" when the pop-up comes up.

It's most likely the post-download scan -- it gets to 100% then the blue mars installer insists it's a bad download. Kaspersky AV tends to be a bit paranoid, but it's kept me clean.

Thanks I havent had problems with my AV, and its also pretty paranoid.

Did you install the client first before developer tools? I know that installation fails if you installed the tools first.

nm, I see its failing on first download...

Anyway, I wish there was a different solution. I personally do like what Blue Mars is doing, but there are still a lot of bumps on the way. My current headache is with beta testing other Collada tools. I expect this hurdle will be overcome, but it is a hurdle to overcome.

It's possible to download the client as 6 separate files and then install rather than doing the web install. The files are on the non developer download page.

Which is where?

The only download page I can find just takes me to the beta notification sign-up.

The "My Page" tells me my email address doesn't exist when I try to get it to send me a password.

The separate downloads have been removed now so I'm guessing they think the problems have been fixed (or haven't split the latest client). The page was off bluemarsonline.com rather than through My Page.

Scott was the dev that put them up so you could probably im him through the developer forums for a new url to download them or let him know what problems you're having although a new thread in the developer forums might be a better way to go so that everyone sees the solution.

Note - I just checked the forums and there's a few threads about the problem with some being solved by uninstalling the tools and others by disabling the antivirus (probably not much help )

Oh, it just sort of irks me -- seems silly to have to turn off AV to install something. I don't think I've had to do that since Windows 95.

Just signed up for beta, and looking forward to getting my invite. I really want to compare and contrast this with SL.

I went in the other day for a little nosey and I was overall impressed. More by the space than anything. I just deleted a whole post because I don't know if it's ok to talk about it yet.

I got a pop up when I went to log in yesterday that said it was going open beta...whatever that means and those in beta now would have to re-issue themselves, except for the people who did beta for creators and that the whole thing would be off line for a day or two.

I uninstalled though.

I've had my invite for a while now but just can't get the thing installed.

Currently I get...

"Unable to load plug-in library. Please rebuild your project and make sure all required plug-ins are installed"

I didn't even know I HAD a project. How the heck can I rebuild it?

Blue Mars server goes up for Open Beta @ 1200 HST (2300GMT/1800EST)

at that time they will be starting to send invites out. Firstly to those who managed to get into Closed and then those that applied for Beta. I have no idea what the time frame will be.

I believe that anyone getting an email will be given the opportunity to invite three people (not 100% clear on this) but if I do and anyone wants one just let me know.

The BM blog has info on the added features ( theres a Bikini for the ladies!!!) for Open Beta and they have added a new city "Shader City"

Let me see if I have this right ... the installer doesn't work for some people, it's mostly populated by people who are going to want to sell me stuff because I'm coming in noob-Ruthed, it has mile-high hardware requirements (not a problem I have good hardware), concurrency will be at best like triple digits, and their idea of a gift for me is going to be a bikini? /me wanders back to SL ... call me when it grows up and becomes social, please.

I just get the feeling I won't be actually getting into Blue Mars until next year at this rate.

I guess they are trying to avoid a flood, but based on what I saw the last week of closed beta, I'm not sure there will be much of a flood.

When Second Life was at the point that Blue Mars is now there was one company involved and major changes decisions could probably be made quickly and easily by a very few people. With Blue Mars you have at least three corporate entities involved maybe more. Big decisions need to go through a number of committees before being approved. Everything will be slower and more expensive.
