My Mood: | Second Inventory is fixing transfer of creator information I was just over at the fourms at OLG and found out that Second Inventory is trying to fix transfer of creator information (currently testing) as a condition of allowing its clients to log onto the OpenLife Grid. But this will solve some IP problems and highlight others. below is my crosspost. I'm very glad to hear that the hold up is related to saving creator information. Holding out for this is really good if it is possible, and it appears as if Sakai & the SI team think it is possible though extremely difficult. Sometimes difficult customers spur creators to new heights. And if you think about it should be possible because a client can take a full permission prim remake it and upload the new object, how is the server to know what the original prim creator information was it has to rely on the client passing that along. ^^ Of course this will highlight an IP issue that needs to be examined, SI code is not open source but half of reverse engineering something is knowing that it can be done. Once SI proves that it is possible other client hackers will realize that they can spoof the creator field on created prims and cause all kinds of havoc. about the only thing the server can check will be that their is that the uploaded creator information is a real av and possibly that the creating av has a full permission prim in its possession. I think we need to be thinking about these things before they come out of the woodwork and bite us on the ass. |

SL Join Date: Way back | An object could be composed of prims, created by one person, have scripts in it (created by, and the copyright of a second person), an animation in it (created by, and the copyright of a 3rd person) and have textures applied that are created by, and the copyright of a fourth or more persons. Some of these scripts/animations/textures may be open source, acquired under license, or simply ripped. Yet, the only 'Creator' info is that for the maker of the prims. This is a serious shortcoming. The core developers over at Opensim have had long discussions on extending the creator info (which could include several names, in the case of a collaborative build), and including copyright and licensing info too for the additional stuff. Second Inventory could find themselves with a lot more updating to do in the future. Rock

My Mood: | That's such a bullshit excuse for blocking it in the first place. It's clear that Sakai has no idea what he's talking about and is pulling every possible excuse he can come up with to justify the policy decision. |

My Mood: | Second point as well, I'm only Joshua Nightshade in SL. Any other grid I've signed up for, I've been Joshua Meadows. I would not want something I created in SL forced to use a name that I'm not using on another grid. Considering that SI only lets you take content that you created (or have full perms for, which is largely much less of an issue) it should be my decision whether or not I want that content to be listed as created by whatever identity I want. Not Sakai's. |
