I ran into one of the BM admins in world and pelted him with questions about the state of the game. Much of the stuff we are used to seeing in 3D Virtual worlds that isnt there yet will eventually be added. The current program is "very beta".

Keep that in mind.

A question to those more familar with the CryEngine than I ... Will it be possible to do things like change the navigation or camera UI ... or add a zoomable camera... Or is that a limitation of the platform?

Definitely not a limitation of the platform. This was one of my questions to the admin I talked to, they are working on it.

My main curiosity is whether it will allow for new experiences... like, say I wanted to create an open-ended RPG on my... city? shard? planet? Could I do that and have pre-made systems set up for that (combat, item stats, etc)? Or will it be months of scripting?

The way I like to think of it (and as I understand it) is that each 'city' could be an entire 'sl' where the owner can set as many or as little of the game rules as they want and build using their own items and rules (lots of work) or using purchased items and rules (not as much work).

Within that framework they create, they can lease areas which people can develop but they are bound by your overall 'city' rules. For example, in your rpg city/world you might have a combat system involving a permanent hud, interface controls, weapon systems, and even custom avatars or clothing which are allowed/disallowed.

For instance you might develop a medieval world with a framework and then lease areas where people might build townships, or castles, and in certain parts have combat.

Alternatively you might build an outer space 'city' space and then rent areas within that where people could build a space station, explore planets, have starship combat etc...

It might be a world where your rules set it up to work something like restrained life.

Or you might want to build a convention city running events such as concerts with 1000's of people attending on the simpler end of things where very little (relatively) would need to be done.

So it might be months of scripting and modeling, or it might not be much effort at all depending on how much you want to customise things and what other developers have done and you want to re-use.
