IMVU and SL have some similarities, but they are actually quite different. Yes, you do buy credits. While IMVU is 3D, it is not a virtual world. You have your own space (which is an apartment by default), and can decorate it and also buy all kinds of stuff for your avatar. However, you don't walk around the way you do in SL. In a particular scene, there are points where your avatar can interact - for example, a chair would have a spot you could sit on, or a club might have spots you can stand on to stand by the bar or to dance (that is what I am doing in those club pictures). There are also interactions between the avatars, like hand shakes, hugs, etc.

IMVU is much more casual than SL. I don't know if you ever used There, but it is from the same creator, and has more in common with There than SL. One thing that is lame about IMVU is you have to buy your own screen name, and you have to buy the ability to try on items before you buy them (which is admittedly useful), and to access mature content.

IMVU does have an interesting system in some ways - they made their site a Myspace clone, which allows you to personalize your page and show off stuff that you have. They push the social network aspect of it heavily.

Their content catalog is also interesting, like SL, people have made a bunch of stuff, and some of it is quite good. You can check out IMVU for free without spending any money. It definitely doesn't hold the interest for long, but there is a lot SL could learn from it.

I tried it .....but after an initial burst of enthusiasm lost interest. I spent my free credits but never bought any. I think after SL and being so used to being able to wander about at will IMVU was a tad restrictive.....or maybe I just did not give it a fair go.

My sister uses it. It actually got us to the front of a line at a nails show once because my sister knew the guy working the venue from IMVU. I fooled around with it once or twice but lost all interest quickly. I'll leave it to my sister and keep my SL.

I tried it out so early, my IMVU account number only has 3 digits. Today if you join you will get an 8 digit account. I have never bothered to download the client since getting my latest computer, so that has been at least two years.

It is what it is, a 3D visual IM client.
