Prok: LCO OpenSim grid allegedly locks out Simone Stern, steals her content

Second Thoughts: SL Legend Simone Locked Out of Legend City Online

Yes, it's prok, but apparently it's quite legit.

Contracts, people. Write them, use them, sign them.

Just goes to show you that life isn't necessarily rosy in the non-Linden lands.

Not deleting her content is totally messed up. That is theft for sure. I'd be totally freaking gobsmacked if i was Simone.

Well... I was there in 03' and content creators contributing to the promotion of the world were not having their accounts deleted and their content commandeered.

I would say by not deleting the items of Simone LCO is demonstrating a lack of professionalism LL has yet to display.

Rumor mill states that LCO/Lala won't be honoring DMCA claims now for stolen content...

Holy Shit.

That's a red warning flag for all content creators.

These other grids like LCO and OLG are just in it for the quick buck. This is literally the virtual world dot-com bubble we are seeing except that places like LCO and OLG have even a lower chance of making it. They cannot handle the tiny numbers of load they get already. Not honoring DMCA claims to me is just one more nail in the coffin for that place.

The long and short:

1) Content creator gets fed up with LL, agrees to provide content for new grid, new shiny grid, grid where everyone wins.

2) Grid Owner pimps out content creator's stuff, displays them prominently on newbie areas.

3) Grid owner locks out content creator, claims content for self.

4) Profit.

DubyaTeeEff.

Not honoring DMCA filings is a good way to get shut down. If this is the case, I sure as shit won't invest any time, money or energy in LCO.

Wow.

And with that, any desire I had to go back into LCO is completely gone, period, forever.

Commercial grids running off of opensim software.

Well any "Grid owner" that refers to themselves as "Grid Diva", to me, says something about attitude.

I would prefer to see a face of professionalism in any business i am investing my money in be it entertainment or not. Knowing that said business owner considers herself a Diva is disconcerting to say the least when you think of the general attitude of 21st century Diva's applied to business dealings.

Which makes me sad, really. I'd love to run a content creator-friendly grid.

Alas, no cash. I suppose the less scruples you have the richer you end up being.

Yea what is with that? Taking something free like Opensim and profiting off it. It's like this free community work is empowering their business and they are raking in the money have over fist for efforts not of their own making.

I though the purpose of the Open Source community was put some code project out there, everyone build on it, make something bigger better and recontribute their advancements/developments back to the originating Open Source community. But it really seems like Open Source = Business in a Box SL style.

Quite true. I do think that any grid that is run by an individual is suspect.

And I don't know how LaLa thinks she can get away with ignoring a DMCA takedown request. It's within the complaining party's right to go to her ISP and request that she be shut down.

If it's possible to trace who her service provider is... anyone have any ideas how to tell who's hosting a grid server?

Well, I agree and disagree. It costs money to run a server. Unless you want an ad-supported grid, akin to a website on a free server where you are barraged by banner ads and Google Adwords, I can understand charging a fee to have a sim. On the other hand, $100 a month seems high when you can get web hosting for much less. (Let alone $295 for a Genuine Linden™ Sim.)

Fixed.

I don't care that people are making money from OpenSim. I care that they're ripping off content in order to make money.

Opensim is free. Artistic talent is not.

I have no problems with using open-source software to enable creativity. Dogwaffle, GIMP, etc.

I DO have a problem - a serious one - with using open-source software to rip off someone else's work and then basically flout federal copyright law.

And yes, LCO is doing just that by ignoring DMCA takedowns.

Two questions:
1) Isn't Legend City the one that was a spin-off of Central Grid?
2) Isn't Central Grid the one that closed after a lot of drama about it being a scam?

This is the first thing from Prokofy i have ~ever~ read.

It was not as painful as everyone says.

I never read the posts he made back at SC or on the old forums - they were way too long and tongue twisty...Kinda like a Maureen Dowd on crack.
