Well, that is what i thought, but when i came back to SLU, i saw this "Legend City Online Roll Call" and everyone was jumping on board and it seemed all that had once been Central Grid that had become LCO had been absolved of any past misdeeds.

And why does the name LaLa Xevious sound so familiar to me...

For once I actually agree with Prok 100%. If anyone needs me I'll be on the ledge contemplating jumping. This is clearly a sign of the apocalypse.

I feel like there is more to this story. It's hard to read Prokofy when everything is so aggressively editorialized.

Still, she kinda sums up how I feel about this here:

Me, either. Did she think she could get away with this?

I'm sure there is more to this story, but it brings to light the issue of being able to trust third party grid operators when it comes to honoring and protecting intellectual property rights. I think Linden Lab has been incredibly foolish to allow these copycat grids to spring up and operate without any contractual obligations to LL with respect to honoring a consistent set of rules and laws. In my opinion LL should never have allowed things to go this far. It should have been set up as a license system. Want to run an SL compatible grid? Great, sign here. if you don't operate up to our standards we reserve the right to shut you down at any time. Now not only are these third party grids competing against LL's biggest income source, they're eroding trust in the entire platform. Silly idealists.

Yes, this was a rare moment of lucidity from Prokofy, Briana.

IANAL, but I think it impossible to waive copyright without formal transfer of rights. Not that will likely help any as in most virtual world disputes the losses are too small to warrant adjudication.

(gah, this is SLU, I should be careful with acronyms - "I Am Not A Lawyer" has nothing to do with butt secks)

They'd be bound by the laws where they operate, but that doesn't do anything to prevent the risk that a given third party grid may turn out to be fly by night or uninterested in enforcing the laws within their grids.

I never read the posts he made back at SC or on the old forums - they were way too long and tongue twisty...Kinda like a Maureen Dowd on crack.
Actually Prokofy did a great post about Sarah Nerd a couple weeks ago, and his post about Starax when he first left was really good too.

These other grids like LCO and OLG are just in it for the quick buck. This is literally the virtual world dot-com bubble we are seeing except that places like LCO and OLG have even a lower chance of making it. They cannot handle the tiny numbers of load they get already. Not honoring DMCA claims to me is just one more nail in the coffin for that place.
OLG is NOTHING like this. Please don't lump OLG into this.

Actually LL has the same conditions in their TOS though worded a bit differently. It's standard CYA language, and it allows them to do things like use screenshots for promotion regardless of who owns copyright on what's shown in the screenshots. It also covers them from lawsuits when things like permissions bugs happen. I don't think those clauses are all that dubious when administered by a reputable company, but third party grids lack the requisite reputations. Maybe some will gain that level of trust in time, but I don't intend to be a guinnea pig with my content any time soon.
