Beneath the Waves

I spent some time checking out the new demo world that realXtend has up to show off version 0.4, and it is incredibly impressive. I have not been keeping up with their development of late, so I hadn't realized how far they had come in a very short time. The most incredible thing about the demo is not the real time lighting, shadows, and mesh support (all very cool things, don't get me wrong).

What most impressed me is that finally, after all this time, you can develop areas under water where the water does not enter inside of the building. The demo world has an underwater dome that you can walk around in and view the water and sea life from behind glass. It also then lets you swim in the water around the dome and surface to the top. I took some pictures - I adjusted the windlight settings to get different effects (and was startled to notice the shadows moved in real time as I adjusted the time of day slider). Now I just need to figure out how to make my avatar not look like Mr. Clean.

Adam, when's all this going back into OpenSim proper?

Also actually, why do meshes allow shadows to appear on their surfaces, but not the prims?

It sounds like they're attempting to make realXtend behave more like an OpenSim plug in instead of a separate entity... which makes sense. There's no point in duplicating effort.

Switching avatar meshes completely with the click of a button was extremely impressive (from human to fish). So was the added water effect once you get outside.

So was the built-in flash movie player.

So were the shadows.

Is this a client for SL? Or a new grid? Or what?

It is an open source project making a product that can be used to build virtual worlds. That is the short answer.

realXtend

You install it like an opensim standalone or you can go into the online test world.

Beautiful graphics but I couldn't get the server to run. I do like their approach but until I can run a server on my machine and log in I'll withhold judgment.

I do have a pretty good machine here and it just keeps crashing so we'll just keep an eye on this for now. Thx for sharing!

Wow, how does that even work?

Most modern single-player and MMO games don't even do that; they usually design boats and whatnot so you never actually go below water level- or they immerse the entire vessel, or they design it so you're not really underwater; the "underwater" environment is completely enclosed.

It looks like Adam's been not-sleeping again. I can't wait to see where the new RexMod goes - I'm convinced this is the right architectural path for VWs on both the server and client side to account for different levels of hardware on the client side, and feature requirements on the server side.

I think it's a client-side graphical trick that's enabled by script/command. It turns on when you turn into a fish, and is visible even if you cam back into the dome.

In your experiments is it possible to use the old SL avatar along with the new ReX meshes?

I was told once it was a one or the other situation and all shapes, skins, etc from SL would not work.

It seems like there should be a way for either to work, but what do I know?

I would imagine that the rex avs and the SL avs are completely different model and setup-wise. Different mesh controls and bones and whatnot.

You can probably use both in the client, but not at the same time.

Yeah, I wouldn't think you could interchange like you do when you click and become a fish.

I just wonder if you can keep your SL body in invo and use it like you could a ogre mesh.

OLG was adamant that they could not be used together. I always wondered why.
