Mycosm

I've had this place on my list of things to watch for a long while now, tho for months there was nothing much to look at except a single teaser trailer that was nifty and somehow uninspiring at the same time. I signed up for the beta sometime eariler this year, but the only communication I had gotten from them was an email that directed me to the trailer.

Today I looked in on it again. I was rewarded.

Here's two to whet your whistle:

Looks like it's possibly user content created, as long as you know how to use 3DSMax plus it looks pretty. I'm definitely interested, I wonder how hard it is to get on the Beta team.

Nice to finally see some sreenshots from this. Their trailer was a gorgeous animation but clearly had nothing to do with their actual product. Not much info on their site, but they're aiming to support imported meshes, have a scripting language, support physX, and have a marketplace for user created content. Looks promising if it comes to fruition.

What is with the races?

on this pic i see:

- European
- African
- Asian
- Indian
- And "Less Options".

What about Latino? South American? Middle-Eastern? Do Brazilians use the African and Indian sliders together? What sliders do you use if you want to reflect an North African ethnicity?

Interesting.

And since I am on the issue. Why is European the first choice? Barak Obama is the new leader of the free world so maybe African should be first choice, no? Why are Indian's last, and do they mean dot or feather? What did indians ever do to people to be last??

It all smacks of conspiracy....some kind.

OMG! Proof that the game is being developed by racist software developing penguin armies under the command of Hitler's new cyborg body in his underground Antarctic base!

You may have missed that at the very top it says: "Base" and then a very very very encouraging 1/10 with an arrow that suggests this might only be page 1 of 10 possible pages of options for your "base".

Hey, they coulda gone with White, Black, Yellow and Red

Did you catch that it appears the only way to femininity is to decrease your masculinity slider? We won't tell the folks on the "Men Becoming Women" thread on the official forum.

Oh hell yes. That actually sounds as if this could be the first real SL competitor, if they do it right. It's seriously the first to go along the same lines instead of merely sharing the concept of 'virtual world'. While not making it a fancy browser window.

I understand that they intend taking a commission on any user generated content sold within world, a sort of virtual sales tax.

It sounds quite logical to me. If that means free uploads and cheaper land pricings (heck, just imagine how much monies flows in SL's product economy daily), I'd be game.

p.s. ohhh, I see a shovel and tree icon at the top in those shots. Landscaping. And a lovely script window in the snap with the car.

And the graphics. reflections in the smooth checker surface.

If this gets going, somebody, somewhere at LL will shit huge bricks.
Damn, I'm excited. Somebody might finally be doing it right.

I'd forgotten about this, I signed up for Beta ages ago. Those screenies look really nice. Must go look at it again.

Registered as well... is there a youtube link or something to the video demo? I'm looking around but haven't found it yet

Found it

Yeah, it is just nice animation with nothing else. The screenies say much much more

I wonder. how much did SL have at lauch? I'm searching for a number..

On that note, MyCosm will have it easier; When SL launched, there wasn't anything comparable. People had to pioneer..to dare to use it, learn something new. To get used to the new concept of such a free virtual world.

In MyCosms case, there are thousands and thousands of users who are, by now, used and aquainted with such technology...and many are eager to try competitors and rivals and something shiny and new. And in the media, it will ring many bells if some 'Second life competitor' with 'improved technology allowing equal freedoms' launches.

I'm not sure what LL had at launch but they refinanced in 2004 to a tune of $8 million and then another $11 million in 2006

Philip claims that they needed $20 million to finally break even (Philip Rosedale: Linden Lab's Capital Investment, Profit and “Small Bets” | Metanomics - Business and Policy in the Metaverse ) - So if the first VC was in 2004 then maybe a $1 or $2 million startup prior to that got LL up and running

You don't automatically get an email after doing the beta signup, do you? I didn't, and now I'm worrying that I maybe misspelled my email address.

Looks completely awesome.

However...the line "Avatar Content is not User Generated" may be a bad bad bad thing

It's not ideal. You can at least import your own avatar, but it sounds like you'll have to import everything -- animations, physics, bones, everything.
