My Mood: | "Not Rooting for Reuters" or "How I Learned About Journalistic Integrity the Hard Way I thought this deserved its own thread instead of a footnote in the other one, but this is a response by the person mentioned in this piece by Eric Reuters basically attacking his journalistic integrity-- something I've complained about previously. I think really this guy needs his job handed to him by now. Is This Thing On? : "Not Rooting for Reuters" or "How I Learned About Journalistic Integrity the Hard Way" "So, I finally had my first bad experience with journalism in my efforts as the guy who does Virtual World Evangelism and I wanted to share it with you. Not only because it is a great example of what journalism should NOT be but also because I wanted to set the record straight. To that end, here is where you can find the original "article" written by Eric Reuters (his avatar name): Reuters/Second Life » Microsoft eyes integration between OpenSim and Windows Live ID And now to my reaction to it. First, let me begin by saying that LiveID was NOT the topic of discussion at all we were talking about Virtual World Evangelism and how I was helping the community. Eric took it upon himself to latch on to the LiveID topic without even digging into the details. In the hour-long conversation we had probably only 5-10 minutes of the conversation about integration this. So, without further ado, here are my comments on the Reuters article (NOTE my comments are preceded by //):" Fascinating read. |

Heaven, to keep its beauty,
cast them out, but even Hell
itself would not receive them
for fear the wicked there
might glory over them.

My Mood: | Oh! But since he's loudly bitching about me and this very thread I will. Basically the summation is, as he's done many times before, he interviewed someone and blatantly misrepresented their words and positions. |

Business: Eclectic Randomness | I've never been terribly impressed with "Eric" Reuters. He's skipped off on almost every major scandal against Second Life. His reporting strikes me as the same kind of "Corporate service" as those "puff pieces" that "Financial Analysts" do on the companies they actually work for, ofr the so-called expose's that are really just short informercials like this one for MagicJack: Hard hitting news indeed. Judged against THIS sort of tripe, Reuters doesn't seem all THAT bad.. but they definitely seem reluctant to put the screws to Linden Lab when they screw up. I'm not surprised that they'd spin a story beyond all recognition to the truth, if it meant a "catchy headline".

OK, so being someone researching all I can about OpenSim and it's potential I just read the article. This is what I come away with for the future of OpenSim: 1. Independent of LL. 2. Different application uses then SL. 3. Different Money System then lindex. 4. No permissions whatsoever. Read the TOS and grab a lawyer if your item is copied. Did I miss anything and what parts of that are bunk? Let's just see how well Eric Reuters reports. | |

My Mood: | The permissions system really. The point that the developers are making is that OpenSim is open source code. They can put in a permissions system that is identical to SL's, and really one already exists in there. I have publicly available sims and people cannot edit the stuff I make, or take them or so on, unless I specify otherwise. That's no different than SL. It's also possible to add a permissions system that's more restrictive even. But the point is that as it's open source code there's absolutely nothing at all preventing someone from going in and removing that stuff. So it's pointless for them to get involved in a cat-and-mouse with it because the code is public and publicly accessible. That's not to say though that modules won't exist for permissions because they do already. And it's not to say that modules won't be created that do more than what SL offers. And I would expect very much that grids that connect to SL would follow identical restrictions on content that SL does, as an expectation and requirement for connection. But the point is that the OpenSim developers can't get involved in a war with people cracking their software because pretty much it's like building more and more complicated locks on a door when right next to the door is a free key dispenser. His comment that by default no copy protection will exist is false, because such protection already exists right now. |

Business: Desperation Isle Estates | Permissions will have to be managed at the grid level, not the sim level. It's not a problem with OpenSim technology, but with how people hosting OpenSim grids manage to protect peoples' stuff, likely by being sole host of the sims or having some kind of "trusted sim" policy. |

My Mood: SL Join Date: 10-21-2004 | Ok, Thanks Joshua. I had a feeling the permissions was the problem because he seemed to fixate on it so much and even quoted blogzilla to stir up some shit. Him making an article like this and focusing on the lack of permissions is very premature at this point. I see it as a gross misjustice to the OpenSim project to make it appear there will never ever be anything but a lawyer as a remedy. And I am quite sure that little article will be spun throughout blogs and quoted in forums as fact.. so even more so an assholish move Eric (since I know from this thread he is reading). Maybe Reuters should stick with Second Life and stay out of OpenSim until it can do some real digging and know what the Hell they are talking about? And I can see totally what Adam was saying and what you said up there in that post. No sense in making a permission system that will be hacked easily.. something better has to be done. |
