Gamer Revolution - Gamer Revolution: Part One

Computer games are a global phenomenon and a $US25 billion a year industry. Over 800 million people worldwide are regular players. Gamer Revolution looks past the hype, paranoia and hoopla to explore the real stories behind the computer game revolution.

Gamer Revolution explores how computer games are not only changing the world, but giving rise to a new version of life itself. The line between the real world and the virtual world is disappearing. Millions of people feel that they have a life inside these games and that it's better than their real life.

In part one, Gamer Revolution takes viewers around the world from Asia to the heart of the Middle East in search of the most mind-bending stories from the cutting edge of the game revolution. It also features interviews with gamers and game developers including Will Wright, creator of the wildly popular life simulation game, The Sims.

Just how pervasive has gaming become? The US army uses video games to train new recruits and to simulate real-life battle situations in preparation for combat. In Korea, computer nerds are the sex symbols of the 21st century. In Syria, a developer has designed an extremely popular shooter game in which the player gets to kill Israeli soldiers.

Every year, the biggest companies in the industry try to out-do each other in an effort to create buzz for their games. It's a high-stakes business. The development cost of a new game has almost tripled in a decade. Eighty percent of games fail in the first year, but for those who succeed, the payoff is huge.

I can see now why the US Govt was worried about SL and other virtual worlds being used to train "terrorists" because that is what they are doing with America's Army.

The irony there being that the game is sponsored by and used as a recruiting tool for the US Army.

Perhaps, though I don't recall AA including the "I'm sitting on a box, you can't shoot me, nyah, nyah, nyah!" feature.

And in passing Psyke - I've really enjoyed your recent info/discussion threads here, many thanks for taking the time to write them up!

First off, thank you for the video...that was entertaining. Secondly, I have to say that I played Americas Army for a long time, years ago. And it is a super high quality shooter. And it's free. I think that's a great marketing scheme, and I praise them for it. We're never going to get rid of War, and we will always recruit soldiers...and at the same time, we will always make games about wars...so the way I see it, you're either the soldier type, or your not. You'll either enjoy AA as a game, or as a gateway...to me, playing AA and wanting to be a soldier is about as strong a draw as playing Operation and wanting to be a doctor--it's all just fantasy and entertainment.

I believe violent video games can make a violent person act out...but we can't just point the finger at the video game industry. If the video game industry didn't exist, these same violent people would find other ways to be violently influenced...so there's no sense focusing on one medium.

It's so fucking backassward. We have our leaders, parents, and officials telling us video games are bad, and they are influencing out children...I tell them to look in the mirror. Our own world leaders are fighting over a myriad of misguided reasons. The people we are suppose to look up to and admire are sending young men to their deaths. Greed and power showcases itself in the ones we let lead us. And we have the audacity to point our fingers at VIDEO GAMES and say THAT'S the cause of violent behavior? When we have abusive Presidents, world leaders and parents showing us openly how evil and hurtful they can be all the time. Pshhh...don't make me laugh.

It's D&D that caused the initial terrorist attacks.

I have to agree that the government (and business) are role models. And if they show greed and violence as acceptable ways to deal with others then their weaker minded citizens will follow that lead.

However I take strong exception to there always being international war. I see Earth as a feudal society and when I think of other feudal systems like medieval England those systems are eventually replaced with law and order. I would be very disappointed to think that invasions should be considered situation normal and therefore acceptable.

I can envision a situation where countries with disputes go to court and those that want to step outside World Law would have all the other countries ready to intervene on the victims behalf.
