Exclamation InWorldz is closing

This will not come as a surprise to many, but Ele posted the official announcement today:

https://inworldz.zendesk.com/hc/en-u...te-of-InWorldz

I'm a mixture of very sad and very angry right now.

From the way it was described, they'd been skating close to the edge for a while but would have survived, but the loan they took out was mismanaged by the loan company and there wasn't enough float to get past that bump.

That's a shame - what a lousy reason for a grid to have to close.

Wasn't InWorldz one of the more populous alternate grids?

Yes, to both. It's the one that was the closest to being commercially viable, though Kitely doesn't seem to do to badly on that front either.

Virtual worlds have been bleeding users for years now, and that's definitely hurt the already-marginal opensim userbase esp hard.

Latest news from Inworldz, posted in the Builder's Support group there right now:
Quote:
NOTICE TO ALL RESIDENTS
Elenia is in the process of working on a potential solution to save the InWorldz Grid. This may mean cashouts may have to wait a bit, but when comparing cashouts to saving the grid, there really is no contest.

That would be interesting. As I said earlier, I'm pretty out-of-touch with their dramas -but I was under the impression that the one person who was the closest they had to a "baron" left in frustration sometime last fall.

That was literally all I heard though. If I knew anything obviously I'd

They're trying a GoFund https://www.gofundme.com/inworldz-in-trouble

After all these years, having to do loans to operate seems dicey, especially with interest rates rising.

Not like a RL fashion house where you buy fabric and pay labor-- these be pixels.

Wish them well but hope it isn't a long drawn out death rattle. Maybe they should rethink the model.

That's the bottom line of course, in more than one sense.
If they still have to borrow money to get over the bumps, it's not a viable business model and they need to do some drastic changes to survive in the long run.

Incidentally, InWorldz has about the same concurrency as Sansar but with more income and less expenses...

Just saw a tweet about the closing and honestly am sad for the founders and users.

I haven't been in there for years and quietly slipped away a long time ago to do the real world thing.

Had my up's and down's with the grid, got in a fabulous fight once (maybe 4 or 5 times...but who's counting?) with Jim but always appreciated the hard work they put in to the place. And they really did work hard on the grid. From coding, upgrades, finding the best servers they could afford, etc.... to dealing with some insane nonsense as new business owners along with all sorts of crazy ass people (including me, on occasion). Without a doubt, the best interest of the grid was always in the front and that took a lot of dedication.

Wish it hadn't come to this and hope they are either able to pull through or close with grace.

I'm gonna double post and add in for any of us who have watched that grid grow over the past 10 years....from how the founders handle things to their tech coding stuffs, etc.

It's been an amazingly interesting times. They did things that people said they would never be able to do and kept that baby alive for a very long time when places and people said they would close in a year. Or then two years or three. They have been accused of all sorts of things and still managed to keep on going. Hell, they even got mesh when people said they never would be able to pull it off.

Hats off to all of them from the founders to the coders to the people who volunteer'd their time to do events, etc.

Oh, and they got ducks. Back in the day, that was pretty huge. For a few of us ;P

Are people so emotionally naive?
More like a bit of realizing that no matter their reason for closing and all this craziness happening and/or need their past needs for loans....

small business closure is always unsettling and as a human, I always feel bad for anyone who has to go through it with very minimal reason to not feel bad for them.

Not everyone is cut out to be a small business owner and sometimes, that lesson is the hard way through own fault or not.

Glad you know so much about how InWorldz was founded.. though, I will say there were only 6 of us... Please go on making things up though, it's amusing.

And if that's the case, then that's their business and a hard lesson.

Also, just for the record...running any business takes skills and knowledge. Marketing, finance, hiring, firing, building a user base....an on line business is really no different. Even if there are others to mimic that came before you - that doesn't make it any easier because you still need the know how to implement.

I have no beef with the people at IW....they may not have always been my cup of tea and I certainly didn't agree with them on many things (and had a great tendency to be a bit vocal).

If they did it to themselves, that's their business - literally. Failing isn't fun - I don't care what the reason is and they have my empathy. As does those who called the place home.

In any case, I had a lot of fun when I was there and my fair share of 'wtf are you doing to the place' moments and fights and whatever.

If she really is in a jam, nothing wrong with others helping. She does have a loyal userbase. Loyal in the dedicated sense, not the mindless rabidity some confuse for loyalty.
