HipiHi: what's the big deal?

I just signed up.

There's seriously nothing here.

Even after I found out how to switch the interface to (mostly) English, you're just dumped into an empty island with other people.

The map is very large, but as far as I can tell there's nothing anywhere. Most places have build turned off, but I can't tell what's buildable.

Right now there's a total of 45 people on. Apparently the record is 60.

This is the SL killer?

I am scared to install it for fear it has some crazy back door in it for the Chinese government or Suezanne C. Baskerville to hack into my computer and kill me.

I heard about that trojan in the installer, and HiPiHi's blasé reaction to the reports. (Before December last year I think.) I'd installed it before that date and it freaked me out enough to reinstall Windows. I have so little faith in A/V software.

Man, STFU. You're not funny.

I emailed HiPiHi again about joining but I haven't got anything back and I really don't want to fish through all the remaining Chinese. I did that last time. Pain in the ass.

True.

The difference is that LL was entering a virtual worlds vacuum, and they've had years to patch it all up.

HipiHi is essentially trying to one-up SL one feature at a time, on the fly, the same way LL did it.

You can't do it twice. It has to be pretty well polished before people will use it for business. It needs content to get people there. If it's hard to use people will stick to SL (it's hard to use but we're used to it).

right now it's an empty continent. Their landmass is the size of the second mainland continent, but there's nothing in there, nor are there people. SL at least kept the population density "up" by releasing sims when it was needed.

I have the impression that HiPiHi understands they're building an entertainment service. LL would do well to realize that. Perhaps the new CEO will.

Judging by the clients they're roping in (intel, millions of us), it definitely sounds like they want the "IT IS A PLATFORM KTHX" folks too.

Besides, if it were geared for entertainment they wouldn't drop you in the desert with nothing around.

I think they have an entirely different view of what we call "entertainment" and how to make it fun.

Time will tell, but I bet HiPiHi ends up being the Peoples Republic of Virtual Worlds instead of "The" virtual world to be in, like SL.

I am a staple here. I have been at SLU since years before you ever heard of or came to Second Life and I will be here when you leave.

And maybe you are forgetting your own forum history - I may have said how horrible SLU is because of the presence of a very vocal minority but I have decided to not let the few like you, take the "J" out of my Joy, though you do try it seems for a lack of anything better to do.

I am Antediluvian in respects to you. Deal with it.

I believe I remember reading somewhere that Hipihi will be running one grid for native chinese (with all the political filters and censorship in place) and a separate grid for the rest of the world. Maybe the chinese grid is packed?

I really wondered how they would handle censorship. It begs the question as to why they would allow people from out of their country to come into their country virtually and do things that the natives cannot do.

Ultimately HiPiHi will be a place where the Chinese government monitors and records everything and the code will probably linked to a 10,000 word text file filled with trigger words to look for. China does not allow anything associated with her to happen on an international scale without there being a lot of control factors and ultimately a ulterior motive behind it all.

I found my Tiananmen Square video game much more entertaining than HipiHi-- it's really awesome when you get to the final boss, Zhou Enlai. The bonus level, in which you nuke Taiwan, is also sweet.

it is the israeli tanks that dont bother stopping:
Al-Ahram Weekly | Region | "The largest prison in the world"
Israeli army bulldozer crushes US peace protester in Gaza Strip | World news | The Guardian
Public Theology: Rachel Corrie's Emails
Annie's letters: 16-year-old Palestinian boy crushed by Israeli bulldozer in Gaza

Nah, it's ok, we'll just giggle and snicker over the massacre of people in an oppressed country where they can't do shit about anything. Aren't you glad you live in the United States?
