Access to Content

It has always been my understanding that the operator of a grid, or of a region on an open grid like OSG, has full access to any content which enters his/her system, whether it's LL or the neighbor kid's Kewl Hakurz Werld. It's the old principle of, "If it's on your computer, you already have a copy of it." Recently someone was telling me that this is not the case. If not, what prevents it?

As far as I know, Siann if you own the grid running Opensim then the grid owner dose have access to the content on their asset server. This, of course, is not the case if you just own a sim in Second Life but LL dose have access of course. If someone runs a sim, standalone connected to OSgrid then they do have access to inventory you drop in the region since they have their own asset database. If you visit any other grid in the free metaverse then the grid owner will have access to items you rez there. If you hypergrid teleport then your appearance is called from your home grid and not downloaded to the grid you visit.

Hypergrid 2, when it arrives may even prevent you from taking goods you buy in any particular grid to your home grid but this maybe over come if the seller is willing to supply you a free copy of stuff you bought in your home grid.

It's actually quite a complicated subject and please, anyone, correct me if I got any of my advise wrong.

These are two different scenarios:

1.) Grid owners: These are the ones providing the basic services (user accounts, inventories, etc.) Whatever you "have" (in terms of inventory) is stored in their database, so while they don't automatically have a copy of it, it's trivial to do a MySQL query and change permissions and ownership of assets.

2.) Region operators: These are people running an OpenSim region. They may be the grid owners themselves; in that case, all of the above applies. However, if they only connect their regions to someone elses grid, they do not automatically have access to the inventories of people visiting the region. Yet, if you rezz (and leave) anything on their region, they may be able to get a copy of it through an OAR (region backup).

That said, please relax a bit when using OpenSim. Just because people can maybe get your stuff doesn't mean they will.
