Ready-to-run standalones

I'm wondering what the current situation with ready-to-run standlone sims is.

I had a nice standalone island (2 sims) downloaded from Open Life, which was great fun while it lasted but sadly it was lost in a computer disaster that was nothing to do with the standalone.

Since then I've not been able to get a ready-to-run. The later Open life versions woudn't work - and now they no longer seem to be available for download.

I tried to set up an OpenSim standalone, but that was much more complicated and despite helpful advice I got nowhere.

So this is one area where things seem to have gone backwards.
Does anyone still offer a ready-to-run downloadable sim? I mean one that you just download, open, start and log in to without doing all sorts of other things.

My old standalone worked pretty well, it was all so easy.

Opensim is atually easy to use.
Go ahead, install it go to the directory and open opensim.exe
When it comes with questions just press enter except when you see 'Avatar first name' last name password and region name.
Then in your SL shortcut -loginuri http://127.0.0.1:9000/

Instead of changing your SL shortcut you can use the Meerkat viewer which has a "local" grid already setup in the grid manager.

Intergrid Teleport - Meerkat Viewer

OpenSim isn't difficult to use, but those instructions are not intuitive at all.

Is there a way that I can have a standalone Opensim on my own computer, and then invite other people to come in to it (and if so, how)? Or is it something that only my own avatar would ever be able to visit?

Setting up a meet on your for a small number of friends is a matter of a small change to one of the settings files, and knowing what your IP address is online.

Like setting up a web server on your own computer, you need a static IP if you want to have it open all the time. Note that the number of people you can get on your sim is based on your upload speed, which for most people is considerably lower than your download speed.

I am having god awful trouble with getting it to run in standalone mode. The opensim dos bit is fine.... connects to my region "Humpsville" and waits.

So I start up the viewer (I tried Meercat and the official SL viewer and both have the same problem) ... I enter my User name and password (that I set in the OpenSim dos window) and it starts to connect, goes through region handshake ....the dos window reports that it sent authentication to the viewer ... and then without fail I get the unable to connect to message saying that I should check my connection .... sometimes it offers me the chance to "teleport Home" rather than just closing the viewer. On these occasions I simply get a message saying I was disconnested to the region I was in before it closes the viewer.

I know it must be something I overlooked and I get so close to logging in I can smell the bloody sea. Any ideas would be greeted with relief and profound gratitude

Do you happen to have Windows Vista? If so run opensim.exe in administrator mode (right click and "run as administrator" or create a shortcut and enable "run as administrator" in the shortcut settings)

Yes I am running on vista but I already enabled run as administrator in the shortcut .... I had read about that on the opensim support pages. I also turned off my firewall as I read that can cause issues when running vista also .... Thanks for the suggestions tho

I just installed a standalone and Merkat viewer on a SHSD Thumb-drive. I'm using the 0.6.6 windows installer on an XP system. I had a similar problem with log-in, in my case i had a different password for local left over from a previous installation of a standalone stored in my client settings. I was able to open the grid manager change the password for local hit the apply button and leaving the grid manager open select local from the log-in line and successfully log-in

Two changes i made to the opensim.ini, i commented out zeromesher and uncommented mesher. I also swapped ODE physics for Basic physics.

Can anyone tell me how to move settings, catch files and other such files to the thumb-drive also.

Thanks! I was trying to set up an open sim and this is exactly what I was missing.

Well Cache files are created by the client, so that has to be a client setting.

If you don't want to show up naked every time you log on, you have to set up a database program.

I like the idea of putting everything on a thumb drive. You could instantly move your build from computer to computer.

I'm currently just using the SL client with a command line setting to auto log me in locally, but running into the issue in this thread OpenSim + SL v1.23 = No Underpants and Undershirt!

Having a database write to a thumb drive is dangerous though. If there's even one interruption while it's writing to the database the whole thing will get corrupted.

Update here:
I wrote a "standalone" launcher for OSGrid - it's the same in principle as the other standalones; except you get connected to the wider OSGrid network (so it's not a standalone).

Linky: OSGrid.org: Highly Experimental Region Launcher

It's HIGHLY experimental, and relies on some things like UPnP to behave -- enter in your OSGrid.org avatar name (register first before running it.); and your desired region name - then click Launch. It should do all the rest (read more on the link above).

Upside - the distro it utilizes is the OSGrid Recommended Release, which is updated 1-2 times each week; so this tool will always let you run the latest releases.

Adam u is a God and I shall now worship u

It works flawlessly ...... downloaded the prog ... ran it ..... fired up Meerkat and whoosh! I was a tad confused initially when I tried to treat it as a local setup. Then I read what you had written properly and connected to OSGrid (you might have seen me hovering behind you .....grabbed a freebie skin and shape (thankyou ) and tp'd to Humpsville

I take it that given I am connected via OSGrid if I got say Carth to log in he could TP to humpsville too?

A really excellent little prog .... and TY ....simplified the whole process greatly for technophobes like yours truly

Well u have started something Adamski

Carth and I were having fun playing with our regions and we were both horrifed at the prospect of them vamoosing when we shut down the prog. So we were discussing getting server space so that we could have them up and running all the time.

We found OVH pricing very reasonable but bugger me it is complicated to the uninitiated like us. Rather than buy the VPS we thought the RPS packages that seemed to be a step up would be good. We were all set to buy when we realised you then had to choose options like Debian or Ubuntu and we got scurred off.

Then we found a place in world that seems to do all that for you and you buy the server off them directly -PioneerX. This seems a much better option to me at least until we know what we are doing. At £25 a month for a standard server package it is a tad more expensive than the OVH package (at face value at least... I am hardly qualified to compare like for like) but then again they supply it set up I believe so I don't have to bug random people with my n00b questions of how to get up and running.

Of course it will be cool if I can learn all this stuff and get to a point were I know what I need and what I am buying but I think this option gives me time to do that rather than trying to cram it all into a week, ending up frustrated and giving up on it.

The text messages last night were classic Carth and Humps ..... are you buying that then .... I don't know are you ...... God you always do this ..... I know but what if we end up with something unsuitable ....... then we change it for something suitable .....okay I am getting it ..... ok ...... god almighty you have to choose..... whats a ubuntu? ..... some kind of alaskan moose I think ...... God help us! Shall I ask Adam ..... oh don't bug the poor guy he will end up hating us ...... oh look at this someone will do it for us ......lets get that ....yeah lets

Yeah, I know James Beejay - he hangs around in LBSA Plaza a lot; I havent been a customer of his, but I know his prices are pretty reasonable; and he was the only opensim hosting provider who wasnt caught out in the FSCKVps clusterfuck - because he kept regular offsite backups.

Well the service is very quick I know that .... Carth's region is up and running already. He managed to pay last night tho and for some reason paypal simply would not load for me, my browser just kept hanging on loading the page. I was incandescent Still I have done it today with not a glitch so gawd knows what the problem was. Really looking forward to getting to explore everything

Well the whole process was painless and smooth. Both Carths region (Serpentine) and mine (Humpsville) are up and running.

I kind of intend to use mine as a place where I can build in relative peace and then upload my stuff to SL. Having said that when you have a whole blank region there temptation is there to do something with it. I am trying to resist for now. I am *supposed* to be getting the store completed in SL ready to open .....but this new shiny keeps luring me back in.

I do have Second Inventory to transfer things but I just noticed that the MeerKat viewer that I am using for OSGrid actually has a backup function built in. I have not tried it yet but looking at the video on the Meerkat site it looks to make the whole process much easier.

its great to have that space to just kind of play about with and do what you like with. For me I can quite easily see it becoming a more permanent home, the blank canvas is appealing to just build on and transform it into something, especially when you have 10,000 prims to play with

This is just a guess.
Adam or Joshua can give you more details.

However, I doubt that your upload bandwidth is anywhere near high enough. Usually upload bandwidth going from your computer (server) to other systems over the Internet is severely capped.

Hi! I've been away from SLU for a while (not from SL, though). Mainly because I lost my random number password but I tracked it down!

Anyway thanks for the responses, and for any more that appear!
