Cool OpenSim Easy User Guide

Hey everyone, I put in some time recently to document a fairly easy process to get OpenSim running on your personal machines!

Check it out:

OpenSim - Install and Configuration Tutorial « OpenSim Easy User Guide

I'd be happy to hear your feedback on this, and I hope it helps you get up and running with OpenSim!

Awesome work Maxx, this is really in-depth for anyone who's interested in getting OpenSim up and running.

Max -- I'm working on this now, and although I wish you had text that was not so dark and not so tiny, I really do appreciate the work you've put in to the tutorial.

I haven't gotten my sim up and running, however, so I suspect that the re-entry point if you skip Compiled is not clear enough. I picked back up at OpenSIm Configuration but when I try to run the simulation I get a "Command script missing" error.

Also, you walk someone through doing a "Save as..." for the OpenSim.ini.example file, but never really make clear whether we make the changes to the new file or go back to the example file. (I assumed the changes should be made in the new file, leaving the example as the backup).

P.S.

Woot! Still getting the command script error, but I'm in!

I'm going to step through it again and see if I left out anything critical, I appreciate you going through it so far. Feel free to ask questions, and I'll try to assist you.

I'll look up that command script error - one sec - if you meant it was the "startup commands" - then you can disregard that error, as long as you have a Region# prompt, you are up and running, and only need to connect your client.

Edit - Ah, good! Glad you were able to make it in successfully! I'll have subsequent tutorials on avatar appearance, terrain, etc....so hang in there!

I remember from my last foray into an OpenSim that the only way to change appearance was to create a new shape and wear that to edit. But, as on previous versions of OpenSim that I had tried a few months back, any attempt to edit appearance freezes my session and I have to log out.

Can you tell I have no patience for being Ruthed?

I've never had any bugs with appearance but there is an outstanding issue that your appearance doesn't persist between login/logout or server reboot and you have to put everything back on each time.

Stupid question - with the great tutorial Maxx has done, is it possible to have other people in the sim with you, or is this just solo sandboxing?

This tutorial looks to be just for solo. It's much more difficult to run OpenSim online where others can connect to you because of NAT issues since most home users aren't directly connected to the internet.

If that's something you want to do a cheap-o server is a better solution; there are some linux ones that are really cheap, between 5 - 15 a month, while Windows solutions are around 25/30.

Eh, it was more of a "ha, come look at my kewl buildz" rather than running a grid or anything.

I suppose flickr screenshots are just as good.

BTW, his tutorial mentions crashing with the OpenDynamicsEngine physics being turned on, but I haven't crashed yet.

Yeah I haven't had any crashing with that one as I recall either, and it's the only one that makes physics marginally normal.

Probably too much to ask (and wrong thread to ask it in), but has there been any work at getting ad-hoc grids going? IE I connect my sim to yours temporarily while we hang out?

If those NAT issues can be cleared, OpenSIM would be a kickass prototyping/sandboxing type environment. I'd love a button that says "bring region online" or something.

Lordfly, try TribalNet (tribalnet.se) it's a modded version of OpenSim which does just that.

Whether there are NAT issues or not really depends on whether your router supports NAT loopback or not. If your router does support NAT loopback then you should be able to locally connect to your standalone/sandbox OpenSim as well as allowing people to login over the internet. This came up recently on the OpenSim users mailing list, and a page to start listing routers which support NAT loopback was started at

NAT Loopback Routers - OpenSim

Awesome, mine is one listed.

Now, how do I set it up so others can connect?

Thanks for the responses! Glad you guys like the tutorial - there are going to be more, just in the middle of a lot of things in RL at the moment.

As for connecting, assuming that people can reach your login uri (via a public IP - so I'm also assuming you have the ports forwarded through your router/firewall) they should be able to get on (if you're running in grid mode...)

Check out the network ports and such at adam's cool opensim site here:

Network Settings - OpenSim

My tutorial doesn't cover running in grid mode - which is really what you need to get others to connect to you. Sorry! I am going to address this, actually. I'll be sure to let you know.

I *have* imported things from OpenSim to SL via Second Inventory - this is also a future tutorial topic, as there are a few limitations - such as linksets, and it doesn't seem to like transferring builds taken as a collection of linksets and un-linked prims.

Yeah, SI copies data by wearing the object as an attachment. It can't copy a group of unlinked prims that way or a group of several linksets.

Actually, it should be possible for other people to login to a simulator running in standalone mode in the same way as they would log in to a grid. Essentially, OpenSim running in standalone is the same as running in grid mode except that all the services (asset, inventory, grid, etc.) are packed into one process rather than being spread out amongst multiple servers.

Thanks justin, for some reason I thought it was only possible in grid - but that is certainly cool if stand alone can!

I'll have to get a documented process down for another blog post when I get a chance.

OK.. I am about to take the big plunge. I have Maxx's ultra easy to follow (and very appreciated) instructions up.

Two questions for you who are seasoned users. And really, these are questions that I would be cool with just a link to the answer if you don't have time to type. I can follow that stuff usually.

1. If I go and build my sim and get it all cool looking and feel it is "home", what happens if I ever change PCs or have a harddrive failure? Is there a way to back my sim state up and reload it later if needed?

2. The only person who I really need to import to my sim to build with is my wife. Is there a way for her computer to connect to mine through the network and she just log in to the same sim? I assume that is a bit different then me, say.. asking Joshua to come to my sim?

Sorry if these are like those SL newbie questions that get answered all the time. I do feel like I am a newbie all over.

Cristiano or Joshua, if this detracts from the thread direction feel free to move it or make it it's own thread.

To 1, it's as simple as copying the entire folder. There's also a handful of files you can copy if you don't want to do the whole thing but considering how small it all is I usually don't bother. So yes, it's simple. I routinely copy states between my main laptop and my smaller one when I want to do work from the bed.

For 2, I'm not sure, I'll ask Adam.
