Two questions for you who are seasoned users. And really, these are questions that I would be cool with just a link to the answer if you don't have time to type. I can follow that stuff usually.

1. If I go and build my sim and get it all cool looking and feel it is "home", what happens if I ever change PCs or have a harddrive failure? Is there a way to back my sim state up and reload it later if needed?

2. The only person who I really need to import to my sim to build with is my wife. Is there a way for her computer to connect to mine through the network and she just log in to the same sim? I assume that is a bit different then me, say.. asking Joshua to come to my sim?

Sorry if these are like those SL newbie questions that get answered all the time. I do feel like I am a newbie all over.

Cristiano or Joshua, if this detracts from the thread direction feel free to move it or make it it's own thread.
My non-explored answer is - you can backup the entire "opensim" directory and it is portable - I've moved a single region setup, and assuming you are using SQLite (not the more involved MySQL install - which you probably are) and have all the settings in opensim.ini set, you'll have all your prims and the local SQLite database moved over.

I have been making backups of things that I'm experimenting with, and it works.

One thing I've noticed is that you shouldn't have more than one "opensim" directory visible from the root drive - I've run into crashes that way. If your backup is stuffed away at least one directory level 'down' from the root, (say, the C:\ drive in the tutorial) you should be just fine.

As for your wife connecting, I am meaning to get tutorials all setup for that - I believe you can, she just has to point her client to your machine's IP - substituting its address for the 'localhost' that is in the modified shortcut I've told you to make when logging in locally.

I hope that made some sense, if not - I'm sure one of the awesome devs can help out, like justin, etc..

Been busy, I'm going to put up some more useful material, I swear!

Adam says yes, it's very simple.

You would just set your external IP address to your LAN one instead of the default (which is 127.0.0.1); when you first set your region up there's a prompt for it, or if you're editing a region that already exists you would edit the default.xml file in the Regions folder (which should be in the root directory or bin if you're using subversion to update).

You get your LAN IP from (if you're in XP) Control Panel > Network Connections > then right click whichever your LAN is and choose status. Click the Support tab and your LAN IP is right under Address Type. It usually starts with 192.168, on mine it's 192.168.1.200

Then to connect instead of using the default loginuri you would replace it with that address and you both should be able to connect.

Oh, one more thing - try to use the export commands to save things as xml files, this may help you if you decide to later migrate to MySQL - I'm working on a tutorial for this, and possibly more....the benefit being is that you'll have appearance persistence in the most recent compiled version (use the trunk resource for SVN versus the one I gave originally).

Things are changing rapidly as I explore and discover more on my own - I'm going to share it all, just have to get a few RL things out of the way before I can devote more time to it.

Feel free to ask questions, I'll be here - or hit the blog and post, either way!

Holy Crap.. I have goosebumps. I am standing on my own region!!

I am not even worried about changing Ruth at the moment.. I feel like I am taking part in a huge step in the future of the internet!

Maxx.. I can't say Thank You enough for that tutorial. I was scared to try it before that.

That would work if the other person was on the same network as me, but I'm talking about someone from the intarwebz.

Did that, am using the precompiled version though. Here is how it looks:

Code:
<Root>
  <Config sim_UUID="5ce78782-3dc8-44c0-bcdc-3e79b15b7eeb" sim_name="OpenSim Test" sim_location_x="1000" sim_location_y="1000" internal_ip_address="0.0.0.0" internal_ip_port="9000" allow_alternate_ports="false" external_host_name="192.168.1.2" master_avatar_uuid="00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000" estate_covanant_uuid="00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000" master_avatar_first="Mac" master_avatar_last="Angelus" master_avatar_pass="Pass removed of course :D" />
</Root>

Did that, mine was 192.168.1.2 which is how I entered it (Opened the default.xml file with notepad) as shown above.

This part confused me. After I entered the default.xml file and saved it, I used the login icon (didn't ask for a IPaddress, just logged on the Dos window) Then started the OpenSimViewer with the shortcut and got the error message.

I think it is that last part I quoted by you, Joshua that may have a step I missed. I am part of the OpenSims for dummies group.

You have to create your own shortcut to the SL viewer in order to access Opensim.

In Maxx's instructions it's about a third of the way down but here's the jist of it:

You would replace the word localhost with your IP, which is 192.168.1.2, meaning your whole string should be -loginuri http://192.168.1.2:9000/

FYI Maxx, you don't have to add -loginpage http://localhost:9000/?method=login to the shortcut.

The default login has always worked fine in the viewer for me.

Another FYI Maxx:

"Now at this point, I’ll admit I haven’t tested what happens if your name doesn’t match what is in the first and last name boxes at the bottom - so for simplicity sake, just keep them the same "

Nothing happens. The first user you create is technically the master user, let's pretend that it would be the parcel owner, but for all intents and purposes it's irrelevant. If you put in a different name it creates a new user. All passwords are ignored by default and by default all users can edit completely the prims of others. It is possible to change the behavior of both (I don't know how though and have never used it because I'm often logged in on one user via Second Inventory and another in the viewer at the same time.)

Hmm, not too sure what you mean here. Isn't having your wife log in just the same as having Joshua log in? Unless you're talking about your wife logging in via the LAN and Joshua coming in from the internet at the same time, in which case your router has to support NAT loopback, as discussed above.

Of course, if only people on your lan need to log in, you can use the local lan ip for OpenSim instead.

Sorry if these are like those SL newbie questions that get answered all the time. I do feel like I am a newbie all over.
Well, one thing about OpenSim is that open source developers, for better or for worse, are not always the greatest at writing documentation. Luckily, users contribute to the documentation wiki at opensimulator.org or write great tutorials, like Maxx. So asking the newbie questions is good in any case anyway, since some of the answers may not be written down yet (and hopefully that should spur the creation of better faqs).

Hey guys - I've put up a text-only post summarizing some of the things here, and some new material dealing with using the OpenSim command line.

OpenSim Command Line A-Go-Go!

Hope that helps mac! (And anyone else going through the process.)

I'll make some more picture-embellished tutorials when I get more time.

Ok.. after fighting all day with the computers to make them work.. I finally got it. (YAY) We were both logged in and all is well.

I messed with my router, redid my home network settings.. nothing. Even tried using OpenLife because the connecting to PCs thing looked easier and they seem to have physics enabled so prims are solid..nada.

The culprit? That weak sauce Windows Firewall! It wouldn't allow her PC to connect even though I was totally networked and even shared my entire C drive with her PC at one point. Drove me bananas.

To configure Windows Firewall to work on a network to share OpenSim:

1. Go to Control Panel
2. Open Windows Firewall
3. Go to the Exceptions Tab
4. Add Port
5. Name it OpenSim
6. Input Port Number 9000
7. Click Ok
8. Enjoy.

Yes, that may be obvious to most but if anyone like me comes along and tries the instructions above (Which worked perfectly) I just wanted to leave this here in case they hit the same bump I did.

Oh, and edit to add a pic of us finally together on the sim:

There she was telling me to take her to my leader.

I use TVersity to stream TV shows from my computer to my xbox downstairs. One night, it randomly refused to work. Xbox couldn't find my computer at all. I spent 3 hours fiddling with settings, only to find that Windows Firewall had turned itself back on and was blocking everything.

Fuck that feature.

It was TCP, Maxx.

I left a blog comment with the instructions.. please feel free to delete it now so it is not repetitious.

Thanks!
