The Official Baseball Thread

I am a Baseball fanatic, having grown up in the shadows of the soon to be demolished Shea Stadium, The New York Mets are the only thing that rival my passion for shoes. This is the place where all of us can discuss, tease and even belittle each other over our teams. *C'mon Trout, pull out that Mariner's Jersey*

Non believer's are also welcome. *Even English types who still are pissed that we improved on your game*

Ah, a fellow Mets fan. I usually go to a few games each season. I was there for several clinches. I was at the last 2 games of the 2000 NLCS, in the very top row at the back of the stadium, up against the fence.

I fell in love with baseball in 1992. My father and I would make snacks, and watch the game together on the television, or go to the 'Stade'. My three older brothers never got into it. We'd discuss every player, crack jokes, and agree on which plays were awesome, or simply scream "Oh no!", (we never dissed our own team).

I usually disliked following a game with anyone else but him. Some either talked too much about everything and anything not baseball, and others seemed to enjoy showing me how much more they knew about baseball.

'Not hard to beat, dip sh*t. I just got into the game. No, I don't know who won the World-Series in 19**. Just drink your beer and shut-up'

In 1994, The Expos, this young (and inexpensive) team, were simply amazing. We had World Series dreams. Well, you all know how that year went.

The whole thing was such a let down, it completely put me off professional sports. Yep, don't follow The Canadiens anymore, either. After that year, they lost many fans (not that there ever was that many in Montreal), and the Expos left for Washington.

We kept Youppi! (mascot)

I know how you feel. I was quietly pulling for the "Spos that year. I hope something like that never happens again, what a travesty.

I was at the Bill Buckner game in '86, right at Field level thanks to my Family connections, and to this day it was the most awesome experience I've had at a sporting event. The noise, the electricty, you actually feel the Stadium shake.

I have never heard an English person slag off baseball.

Come to think of it, I've never heard an English person discuss baseball.

Is it really based on that game girls played at school?

If I'm honest I'd have much preferred to play rounders than football. I draw the line at netball though. (The other girls-only sport at school.)

I haven't either. The only American sport I have noticed has a following over here is American Football, and that's still a very small following.

Football (soccer) is by far the most popular sport in the UK (and in fact the world), I reckon followed by Rugby. Cricket is still reasonably popular, but interest in that is not what it once was.

It's funny, around here I'm seeing cricket games popping up in parks, I guess due to the large Indian community in these parts.
Which I'd rather see on ex baseball fields than Soccer I guess.

Another team I secretely root for when The Mets are out of it.
I adore Wrigley Field.

It's really popular in India, Pakistan, and Australia. It's still popular in the UK, but I would say not to the same extent it is in those three countries.

Out of the American sports, I think I could most easily take to Baseball.

Been a Boston fan since I was knee high.

Mets? I cant believe you are booing Santana already after one bad start. That was really classless of the Mets fans. What a warm welcome!

GO SOX!

Born and bred Red Sox fan since I was a small lad. Bucky F-ing Dent is one of my first baseball memories.

We've had a good coupla years lately tho :gloat:

And Beau is right. Us Sox fans wait at least until the 2nd inning of the 2nd start to start booing the new pitcher

I think they are just frustrated he hasn't put out a good album in a few years.

Unfortunately we have our share of idiots.(Probably Boston agitators actually) There is a big Yankee inferority complex unfortunately, which has always baffled me. Whether the Yankees are good are not really doesn't matter to me unless the Mets are playing them. And in the era of interleague play I have to actually root for the Yankees sometimes.

At least they aren't as brutal as Phillies fans. Thanks you for a nice 2 put of 3 series, BTW. Now it's time to take on the Cubbies.

I love you Brenda. Truly. You're one of my best friends.

Why, oh why, do you torture me? The Mariners are 10-10 and the only team in the Al West they are ahead of is Texas. I'm a Mariner fan to the core, which means I'll never give up on my boys, but oh how painful is this season going to be? Why does God torture me like this?

Add to that the loss of the Sonics and the likely disaster the Seahawks' season will be next year. At least we still have junior league hockey. The Seattle Thunderbirds...oh crap. Never mind.

*sinks into a deep depression*

Look at it this way. 10 -10 is the same record as.....The New York Yankees. Not so bad now, is it?

The most difficult decision in life is not whether to tell your best friend her lover is cheating on her---and you're who she's doing it with, it's the choice between Workd Series lodge seats or Gucci ankle boots.

The Yankees have prospects and are likely to improve as the year goes on. We've peaked.

Yet - I'll still watch every game I can and I'll still root for them, right up until the season is over. I don't know why I do that, but I will.
