| The knock on the door We always read about it, see it on the news and portrayed in movies and tv, the dreaded knock on the door. Tonight I had to go through it. When I opened the door and saw the policewoman standing there I thought it was either something they didn't like about the travel trailer nosing out into the sidewalk or maybe a neighbor was broken into and they needed to ask questions. But before saying anything she wanted to know if there was anyone in the house or anyone I could call to come over. I was confused, it didn't register. Then it slowly came out.... My father was coming home from a steam engine convention just out of town, when his truck for whatever reason left the road and started rolling over and over. By the time the people behind him stopped and ran to his aid...he was gone. He was 74yrs old this past December, adopted me when I was 8 and was the only father I ever knew. He was a teacher, a technician, and loved the sciences and earned a spot in the Canadian National Airforce Museum for his development of non destructive testing in aircraft. We just called him Grumpa or Pops. My mother had a long drawn out battle with cancer and we had our chances to say what had to be said. This time, was different and it had been a while since I told him I loved him. I love you dad, thank you for everything you ever did for me.

| Sorry for your loss Casper. There's nothing anyone can say to make this better right now. I lost my mother suddenly 4 years ago, and although things are better now, I still get my days. I think it's the same for most folk. The only advice i can give is think of the good times, Casper and know he'd want you to smile when you think of him. |

Opera not Oprah!
| Please accept my sincere condolences Casper. My own biological father died very suddenly and I know too well the feelings of regret that there was no time to say the stuff I wanted to say. It does get easier in a way because naturally you start to remember all the times you did say those things. Take care of yourself because that is important too. xxxxxxxxxxxxx

| I can't even imagine what that would be like. What a shock and how unfair. It's hard enough to lose someone you love, but to have it happen so suddenly and with no chance to say good-bye is just brutal. I'm so sorry. |

| Losing a parent is tough, I still catch myself thinking I want to call Mom about something, all these years later. Nothing I say can make it any easier, but you have my most heartfelt sympathy for your loss. |

| Thank you all, if I could really hug all of you I would because pressing the hug or thanks button is not enough. Your kind words and thoughts mean more than you can imagine. I haven't slept yet and I keep catching myself going outside and expecting to see him pull up. My brother and I have to retrieve personal effects from the truck today and while I can handle pulling out his personal belongings, I'm afraid of the damage I'll see and picturing it in my mind. When my mom passed away and I moved back to Canada from the U.S. my dad begged me to come and live with him in the huge house they had. The last few years he'd taken to sleeping on the couch in front of the t.v. in the den. I would always come check on him and make sure he was ok.I always imagined that's how he'd go...peacefully in his sleep on the couch. Knowing that a loved one's last moments were terror filled is not easy but I'm grateful it was merciful and quick. Thank you all and to Cristiano for enabling us to have this virtual community where when needed we can vent, we can cry, and we can find solace. I was always shy about commenting on other people's losses.....that has changed. |
