If you travel to Spain...

...make sure your flight doesn't go to Bilbao on a stormy day.

It is not that uncommon I guess. Youtube is full with these kind of crosswind landings.

Better don't visit a stormy Düsseldorf either.

I hate windy flights. I remember one in particular was on a 737 flying into New York's Newark NJ airport one very windy day. The flight had been very rough, and the landing pattern on this particular day had the pilots coming in from the west and then doing a quick steep turn to starboard before setting down on the runway. Just as we banked into the turn, a huge gust caught us and I really thought we were going over. It was the one and only time I have ever screamed out loud on a plane.

AirFrance takes stressful landings to a whole new level.

Thankfully, I love turbulents. I'll be flying into Duesseldorf in about two and a half weeks, myself.

and people wonder why I hate flying...

yes, yes, I know the odds per person, per flight, and even per flight hour*. that doesn't doesn't change the scale, or the survivability, or the fact that that all I could possibly do is stick my head between my legs and kiss my ass goodbye.

*if you judge by flight, or flight hours, you actually are safer driving, even adjusting for time difference.

If I'm ever in that situation, I'd hope the pilot would just circle the airport for an hour and pass out free drinks. I'm very much in favor of staying alive.

I'm terrified of flying. And those videos have just reassured me that I have no need to go anyplace that requires me to get on a plane.

It is the safest way of transportation on earth, by far.
Cross wind landings are standard procedures.
Every pilot can handle that.

comparing passenger miles makes air travel look good, but comparing on the basis of vehicle miles produces an entirely different picture... it's also the statistic that no one seems to publish (although you can infer it from pilot statistics).

if you go per passenger hours, commercial land travel wins, and if you go per journey, pretty much everything that isn't two wheeled beats air travel, but then cumalatively, you do those travels more often raising risk.

long trips also stretch the odds for air travel, since most crashes occur before, or more usually after the cruise portion of the trip (which is why per trip statistics are used at all, because they ignore length).

traveling an airliner is roughly 2 orders of magnitude safer than smaller non comercial flights (private jets and smaller). and and any region with snow or ice is twice the risk of one without.

Air France Flight 296 Crash - YouTube
I had to look this one up. Apparently, it was during an air show, and the pilot was flying at 30 feet when he should have been flying at 100 feet. Like the Costa Concordia incident, the guy in charge used poor judgement and killed people along with losing an expensive vehicle. This time, it wasn't the weather.

I love flying (and airports), and I wish I was able to do it more often. When we land though, I'm one of those people who clap and cheer. Not so much because we've landed safely after 'flying through the air', but because it's dorky and fun.

I stop at kissing the ground. I'm not completely crazy.

I used to love flying. I haven't been on a plane in a long time, though.

Well, I've never been to Spain, but I've been to Oklahoma.

I love flying, the physical act of flying. However, I've grown to despise airlines and airports.

Gawd. Cory never could grow a beard.

They're still touring at last report. But not with Chuck for many years.

I love flying too. I never got on a plane until I was 30 so it was quite the exciting moment for me. When I flew to Spain we kanded at Malaga, not Bilbao. I was watching out the window and saw the airport on the coast... and we flew right past it and out acrodd the Mediterranean sea. It was 20 more minures before the pilot turned round and flew back. I have no idea why he did that.

A bit late I know, but I'd like to take this opportunity to state that I'm very much in favour of free drinks...

depends on the runway facing, and the direction you are coming from, but it's also possible to get bumped back to a holding pattern if there's a problem on the ground like the runway not being cleared.
