New record high price for a photo: $4.7 Million

Record for any photo sold at auction set in NYC - Yahoo! News

Of course the first thing I wanted to know was, what was in this photo that made it worth so much?

Well, a picture of a river, of course:

Right Click and 'Save as..."

You're now 4.7 Million richer.

Pffft.. that isn't worth more than 2.3 million. Rip off.

Why not simply go back to the same place and take your own picture?

This reminds me of "the voice of fire" painting that the canadian federal government bought for its collection back in 1989 for 1.8 million....

What art? It' a damn picture.

This is an image which speaks to everyman on many different levels," Outred explained.

Some have questioned whether the photo is a work of art worthy the hefty price tag. An unnamed gallery professional told Wired they thought the price was exorbitant, attributing the high sale price to a new fad where photographers are finding it easier to sell their work in higher-priced fine art markets if they call themselves "artists."
Outred, however, told CBS News that it's not just a matter of rebranding. He believes artistic photography is evolving as an art form, and because of all the innovations, we'll see more multi-million dollar photographs sold at auction.
uhu. I would say that to if I where him.

I think the buyer is an idiot. But who am I to judge?
If someone can pay it and wants to pay it. It doesn't hurt anyone so it;s ok by me.

But, DAMN!!

It's a "chromogenic print" on glass, meaning it uses the color print dyes from the age of film photography, which usually were on paper. Some astronomy images before the digital age were taken on glass plates, but that was usually black and white.

The advantages I can see for doing it on glass are:

* Easier to handle and mount than a paper photographic print

* Possibly longer life if it is on the *back* side of the glass, and the glass keeps out damaging UV that can cause photos to fade.

Disadvantages are:

* Glass is breakable

* It has to be done custom, which is expensive.

I can see maybe a couple thousand for this photo, not millions.

Unless it measures 8 feet by 6 feet and is printed on a slab of solid gold, its not worth 4 million.

Interesting. How rich must that person be to have wasted 4.7 million dollars on a picture he or she will probably only look at in passing every now and then, if that. Wow.

There's such a huge gap between what's important to the wealthy and what's important to the not-wealthy.

I personally like the picture SimonLeo posted much better!

Well I'm almost certain that was bought as an investment strategy. However...

it always surprises me when people say "I could have done that." Seriously -- you didn't. Some of the early Beatles tunes are ridiculously simple in every way. A person with a year's guitar lessons could have written some of those songs. But no one says that.

Truth is that things are done in a moment of time and are the first, or different, or worthy of note for their time. And yeah, maybe you could have done that. But would you have? Would you have thought of doing that at that time in that way? Because that's just as much part of the artistic process as the actual execution.

Of course, its entirely possible that the guy was just clowning around and is laughing his ass off all the way to the bank. And I don't get whats so great about that photo. But I guess someone is impressed.
