Child-Man in the Promised Land

Discuss!

Today’s single young men hang out in a hormonal limbo between adolescence and adulthood.

It’s 1965 and you’re a 26-year-old white guy. You have a factory job, or maybe you work for an insurance broker. Either way, you’re married, probably have been for a few years now; you met your wife in high school, where she was in your sister’s class. You’ve already got one kid, with another on the way. For now, you’re renting an apartment in your parents’ two-family house, but you’re saving up for a three-bedroom ranch house in the next town. Yup, you’re an adult!

Now meet the twenty-first-century you, also 26. You’ve finished college and work in a cubicle in a large Chicago financial-services firm. You live in an apartment with a few single guy friends. In your spare time, you play basketball with your buddies, download the latest indie songs from iTunes, have some fun with the Xbox 360, take a leisurely shower, massage some product into your hair and face—and then it’s off to bars and parties, where you meet, and often bed, girls of widely varied hues and sizes. They come from everywhere: California, Tokyo, Alaska, Australia. Wife? Kids? House? Are you kidding?

I guess I'm just an old fashioned type of guy.

Funny thing is my wife and I actually experience a form of prejudicism for having the life we decided to lead. People see us at such a young age (I'm 34 she is 33) with such a large family and look at us like we are nuts. People make comments that it is irresponsible even.

I know for a fact it was a key reason I did not get a Job at least once in my career. I interviewed with 3 people, my friend was a 4th but I am not counting that one. In the end, He and one other guy wanted to hire me. The two main bosses, both VP's were against bringing me on board and one of the reasons was they questioned my judgment once I told them about my family.

Personally, I don't have a problem with guys or gals who don't want to marry, settle down, or have kids.

What I do have a problem with is guys who expect their parents or wife or girlfriend to support them while they do nothing... not even housework.

Not wanting to be nosy, but why tell them? It's none of their damned business.

It will be however if he has to leave early to go pick up one of his kids, or attend a soccer game, or play, or whatever. Or when he has to call in sick because his kids are sick and home from school. Not entirely fair to ask the people without children to pick up the slack. We don't have an excuse to cut out of work early.

The above reminds me of this:
It used to drive me mad that smokers got smoking breaks at work whereas non-smokers had to keep on working!
If I claimed I was an alcoholic, could I get a beer break?

Anyways, kids are different and I think that if an employer discriminates against someone with kids, while I understand why, I don't think it should be allowed.
I posted, a while back, a list of things it is illegal to ask in an interview in Britain - family was one of those things.
