Massive quake hits Japan - CNN.com

I hope all SLU members in Japan and their families are safe.

The earthquake was 8.8 and hit 230 miles from Tokyo.

Tsunami expected to go all the way to Hawai, could reach USA coast. Fortunately Japan is built to resist against earthquakes.

Over 4 million people in the Tokyo area are without power, and cell networks are not functioning. It is going to be incredibly difficult for people to communicate.

A quake of this magnitude is probably a megathrust quake like the one in the Indian ocean in '04. There will almost certainly be large aftershocks.

Yayy for the 5m seawall.. we are still here and the main tsunami is past ...

thoughts go out to all people on the pacific shore, especially now to okinanawa which has a 3m tsunami warning.

Something I always wonder about is how people can be sure the earthquake experienced is the 'main' quake and not a foreshock for something even bigger?

There have actually been several in recent days - this is the worst so far. I'm not sure exactly how they determine which is the main quake, but sometimes aftershocks can be even worse.
