problem is that this will hit the philippine plate and the eurasian plate where it meets much more close to land near just south of tokyo...
so i think it is far from over.

A scientist said the wave propagates at 800km/hour, it could reach USA west coast in the next 2 hours.

We can't in many cases. It's usually just a matter of waiting. However history and archeological evidence of past quakes suggests that they don't get that much bigger than this.

Concidering we are barely three months into the year, 2011 is already a mass of disasters, both natural and man-made. I hope the rest of the year is calmer.

eku, glad to hear you and yure are safe

They don't, and this is the 4th or 5th 8.5-plus quake in the past decade worldwide.

There's a lot of concern about the tsunami wave, some sources are saying it's higher than some pacific islands. Taiwan is expecting it to hit in an hour or so, Hawaii is estimating it for six hours I think...

With a certain element, they're hard to parody because their normal behaviour is so over-the-top.

It looks like so much damage to the coastal areas. It is scary to see how fast that water moves and then when it picks up all that debris. I felt the entire building roll like I was on a boat and I'm near Osaka which is farther away from the Quake. So glad that you are okay Eku and Yure, I hope you get ahold of your family and they are okay. I don't think Ranma is in Japan, but she has family here? I hope all is okay with her family. I'm not sure who else is here.

I fear the death toll is going to rise. There are already many people reported missing and injured. =( My husband called me from his work and is okay, but I don't know how transportation will be affected yet.

There are so many right now, but if you are in the Tsunami warning areas and asked to evacuate, please don't wait to get out. Get to higher ground. When they hit, they hit so fast and are devastating. Don't risk your life.

yes we had a resounding and resonating boom when the wave hit the 5m seawall... we are only 10~20m away from the seawall so we are very very lucky because we were asleep when the community trucks went around announcing evacuation.. (yure is on nightshift.. so we sleep in the day now)
I hope there are no more coming tonight..

my heart goes out to all the ppl in the tokyo~tohoku region and also hope that everyone in the tsunami area across the pacific are all safe and well.

have been able to get most friends on skype .. waiting for others to respond.. looks like docomo and AU mail isnt going through very well.. and calling the phones just gets a system busy signal.

yes that was sendai .. which is first landfall to the epicenter.. it was hit by 10m tunami .. so we will have to wait for the damage report ... maybe days before we will know the total damage and fatalities..

Keep safe Eku and Yure.

I just heard another huge after shock hit. Earthquake one thing, tsunami quite another.

Get to high ground if you can okay? Promise us that.

Huge

its ok... we are far enough from sendai to have not felt the quake..
our only prob is that we live right on the sea.
but they have closed the seagates on the river behind us and the seawall in front of us is over 5m high and curves towards the sea like a C shape.. effectively making waves turn back on themselves...
