Nanny state
January 12, 2008

I can relate to the smokers complaining about our nanny state, where government infringes on their right to smoke. As a drinker, it's even worse. Not only does the law allow my employer to forbid drinking at work, but I can be fired for drinking on my own time, during lunch or before work. If I drink and drive, I'm a criminal. If I share a bottle of wine with my son's underage friends, again, I'm a criminal. I can't even enjoy a few beers while I'm hunting.

Where does this government meddling stop?

I doubt it, he does have a valid point. Any human has the right to kill itself however they like to. Though it's odd for people with that viewpoint to be so articulate.

(Personally I'm all for as many limitations on those substances as possible, especially smoking and including against hunting, I'm just saying that guy probably isn't joking)

I think he is just making a really good point.

Now the question is, if it is so bad for you and need to be regulated so much, why don't they just ban it already. Outright ban the sale of it.

Oh, wait, they make too much money off of the taxes to actually ban it.

If I drink and drive, I'm a criminal. Yes because you are at a very real risk for killing
someone.
AND
I can't even enjoy a few beers while I'm hunting.
Yes again, you are not the only hunter in the world. You could kill someone.
As for the boss firing you for drinking on your own time.....well if it's affecting job performance see ya. If it's not, I doubt they will know.

At the end of the day the gov't isn't protecting you from you. They are protecting me from you. For every joker that could have 1 drink there is 5 who are asshats.

Yeah, I thought maybe he was making a point about the smoking bans using more extreme examples. But there is the possibility he is 100% serious about drinking in those situations.

The smoking ban that took effect in Illinois is pretty wide reaching... all public places except for tobacco/smoking shops. As a former smoker, I'm a little torn, knowing how smokers are affected and not liking being exposed to second hand smoke anymore.

Though thinking about it, those are all situations where drinking has significant risk of harm to others, analogous to second hand smoke. Perhaps his point is that but more subtle than I pick up on a Saturday morning when I read it.

Sorry if I was unclear, but I was talking about tobacco.

Hey, they have done it with many other drugs, so why not tobacco?

Prohibition doesn't work. It's been tried and failed many times. The war on drugs is a good example of this too.

Also, turning 20% of the population into nicfitting criminals overnight would probably cause some trouble until they get winded.

I agree, but then why do they have all this bull in regards to law. The politician go out there and stomp their feet telling us how bad this all is for us. They are going to raise taxes on it so people will quit. They are going to ban smoking here, there, over there, and that spot to the left to protect us. They tell us that the "big tobacco" just wants to kill us so they can make a buck. It is the worst thing on Earth for us to use, but they keep it legal. The hyprocrocy drives me crazy.

Very true, for all we know he was serious. You never know with some people. I am just going to assume that he was just making a point with it. It just seems too well written not to be.

LOL Let's hope he's joking. There are more smoking laws coming out here as well soon. Cigarettes are already $12.00 a pack but people still smoke. ( I do... LOL) but meh. When the day comes that they say I can't smoke in my own house then I'll be majorly pissed.
