Personal theory?

Take 1 crazy bastard that speaks semi-welll, looks decent in a suit, and has a good first impression and let him tell a million people about his ideas .. no matter how crazy he is, a small percentage will believe his BS. Use their money to make a realistic set.

Repeat.

Yes, he became president when the country was gripped by runaway inflation, our military was in such a mess they couldn't even fly accross the desert to rescue the hostage from the oh so sainted and WONDERFUL Iranians and basically brought about the end of the Soviet Empire [those wonderfully cool folks in the Kremlin who were itching to start WWIII once we got weak enough {aka 4 more years of Carter}]. Not to mention the middle class being taxed out of existence.

Yep, a real snake oil salesman that Ronnie.

Did he make mistakes? yes. Was he perfect? No. But he was sure a HUGE improvement on the witless hand wringing of Jimmy Carter.

I'm not sure, but I think Sooz liked Reagan.

not quite as much as you think. I had very little use, and still don't, on his views of the working people of this country. I regard him as a bit of a necessary evil toget us out of the mess we were in due to Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon and Lyndon Johnson.

He exceeded my expectations.

To this day I am convinced that the Soviet gerontocracy was convinced Carter would be a two term president, hence giving them the opportunity to either start WWIII or roll into western europe unopposed.

I like what he did with the balance of power and the stagnating inflation from the late 70s. I did not like other things.

What he did do right, qualifies him for greatness, in my humble opinion however.

I will post no more on this on this thread on RR because we are veering off topic.

Funny thing is we were probably closer to Nuclear war under Reagan than any other time , including the Cuban Missile cirsis - The peak was 8th of November 1983 - A fascinating documentry was aired last week here about the last quarter of 1983 and how Andropov and the Kremlin were misreading signs and truly believed that the West was about to launch a first strike - "The Brink of the Apocalypse" by Channel 4

I thought Paul Schaeffer was the scary gay, bald dude from the Letterman show who thinks he's cool because waving his hands makes people hit drums.

Back when I had more free time and used to make the summer pagan festival circuit sometimes, I was always floored by the number of people who would believe absolutely anything... a con waiting to happen.

A couple of my friends and I used to joke about how we should start a cult (involving snakes and topless hotties). As the evenings wore on, we would pose wilder and more ornate scenarios. The sad thing is that if we hadn't been pretty ethical people, we could have pulled it off.

I thought it was only that crowd, until I ended up in a "closed" meeting of an evangelical Christian church where they were discussing demonic cults. They had a film that was such a beautiful example of agiprop that any oppressive regime would be proud to take notes. They also had this poor girl who "heard voices" "was being followed around by cult members" ... in other word, probably a paranoid schitzophrenic, untreated. No wonder the Dark Ages were such a clusterfuck.

There seems to be a fairly substantial number of folks in the world with mush for brains.
