I'm OLD. Really OLD.

It is true. I was born with the defective "looks too young for his age" gene, and have been tortured by it ever since. Mainly because I act it too.

Seriously, I've never had a problem with my age until recently, and perhaps because I go out with somebody several years older, and so many of my everyday friends are several years younger than me, I tend to feel (and act ) younger than my years. As I get older though, people I haven't seen in years suddenly turn up out of the blue, and although they're the same age, they sometimes look like this...

...and their eighteen year old kids flirt with me because they think I'm hot 28/29 year old dude.

This kind of happened at the pub last night. A guy and girl turned up who I went to school with. They got married shortly after I last saw them...1989 and they had two boys over the next two years. The eldest kid's girlfriend was present, and was behaving really inappropriately.

I had a better rapport with their kids than with them, talking about music... clothes... gaming... cars, and their father seriously gave me the creeps when he referenced (in private) a sexual encounter we had when we were teenagers. He's a dirty old man when he mentions that now, not a cheeky, smutty, oversexed kid.

Anyway, this whole age related identity crisis is dragging me down now because I always feel like I should exude the kind of mature, responsible attitude that my heterosexual schoolmates do whenever I bump into them.

What a strange post this was. I'm just thinking aloud, and not editing.... I'll no doubt regret it later.

Walker,

I think the problem with a lot of people is that they act too old, too quickly. they lose their playfulness and enthusiasm when they start handling adult responsibilities. You're young at heart, and that's an awesome thing. You seem to be a smart, responsible fellow. Being responsible doesn't mean you have to take your Geritol everyday and stop doing the things you enjoy.

I think it's great that you relate to younger people. A lot of elderly people have told me that hanging around younger people makes them feel young. If your tastes, hobbies, etc are more closely tuned to younger people, more power to you. It means you'll stay interesting a lot longer than the fogies whose only concern is if they've had their BM for the day and if they consumed enough fiber.

There's no age limit on preferences. It's okay to like computer games (hello, look at everyone on SLU) and new music and trendy clothes or whatever the youth are into beyond your teen years. So stop worrying. You're awesome just the way you are.

You always say the right things. What a great analysis though.

I suppose I'm kind of torn. I've already lost contact with a lot of heterosexual friends from my youth because...well...it's almost like we gradually veered off into different parallel universes as we got older. I've often thought it would be great to see this person or that person, but when I bump into them, I realise that we have so little in common now that there's little chance of re-establishing old friendships. But so many of them are still friends with each other. I guess it's only just dawned that I've lost contact with a generation I not only grew up with, but was very close to. It hurts, but I'll get over it.

I think it's natural that we grow apart from the people we grew up with. I'm not saying people don't stay in touch, there are many that do, but I think growing apart is more common because life happens, interests change and experiences are different for everyone. And it does hurt.

There are some old friends I'd like to run into again. The last time I saw my two best friends from school was about twelve years ago. I was married and had a child, they were both single, unencumbered and talked about dating and what not. We didn't relate on the same plane anymore, and it was difficult to find common ground.

It does hurt to grow away from people we've cared about. But the way I look at it, there's a whole world full of people I haven't met yet. And out of all those people I haven't met, there are a few I will meet, and click with, and new friendships will be born. You can never go back. Forward has a lot going for it though.

Also, it gives you a chance to finally throw away any horrible ornaments a friend or relative may have given you - oh, it got broken in the move, damn careless delivery company!

Hmmm. I believe an old friend has done this to me twice now.

First he lost my Prick Up Your Ears (Gary Oldman film) VHS tape when he "moved to London" back in the late 1990s, and I was *furious* because I recorded it off the TV while I was still at school and... erm, discovering myself. The piece of plastic itself just had a lot of sentimental value.

Then I got in contact with him a couple of weeks ago about a commercial filmed by the production company he worked for. I was in said commercial, but it was only for local consumption -- in cinemas, theatres, universities, council related complexes, etc., but I never got a copy. "Oh, I threw it out when I moved to Brighton a few months ago," he said.

Bedridden with a cold, and getting a little burnt-out on WoW, so I'm taking a short break.

This has led me to realize I have absolutely nothing to do.

Think I'll finish rearranging furniture or something.

Thanks for the well-wishes everyone, feeling a bit better already

And I actually was in EVE for a while. Perhaps I will reactivate my account for a month and see what has changed.
