If s/he is still speaking to you after this, you could escalate and talk them into reading Thomas Pynchon.

Been on-edge all day awaiting a call from my mother. She had to go to hospital to get results from a doppler test, and thankfully the blockage in her leg causing the blood to occasionally flow backwards is down to a faulty valve in a varicose vein, and not DVT.

That's not as serious as it sounds btw.

I'm really relating to this song by The Knife right now thanks to my mother's frequent health scares.

Phew, that's good news. My mum had something similar, and after the op she was just fine.

Thanks Midi. They offered the operation but advised against it because she's so active right now and not in any pain. She's got to return in twelve months - or before then, if she starts feeling any pain or discomfort - so they can evaluate her again. Stripping the varicose veins (45 minute day clinic procedure) will eventually be required. I guess that's the procedure your mum had?

She went for a hernia repair last year, only for the surgeon to discover during the procedure that the lump was actually a swollen inguinal lymph node. The biopsy came back negative, but she had all kinds of complications related to the surgery (leaking lymphatic fluid, infections, etc.), and a huge number of tests to rule out other causes like leukaemia, lymphoma and other cancers. When she went for the results of each test, I was beside myself with worry.

Finally, over a year later, her consultant is 95% certain this unspotted varicose vein/valve issue caused the swollen lymph node all along.

Why can't the human body be less complex?

Cost of all the above tests & treatment? £0. Even her prescriptions are free because she's over 60.

I think that must be the op Mum had, she also had complications, something to do with her foot, and it was affecting her mobility, so they took her in as soon as they could. These things are never simple.

It's incredibly hard watching your parents go through these things, my dad had a scare last year - they found a lumpy thing at the back of one of his eyes, which could lead to sight loss. they're monitory it at the moment, he has to go over to Sheffield every few months, and every time he goes I feel like I can't breathe til I know how it's gone. It may be a precursor to a rare form of eye cancer. Gulp.

And the NHS is a good thing isn't it? They pay for all of Dad's trips to Sheffield, I can't imagine how much more stressful it would be if we had to worry about how mum and dad were going to pay for it as well.

Sorry to hear about your Father's situation Midi. I hope he'll be OK.

You're right. It really is hard watching them go through these things, and it sometimes seems like our roles have been reversed. I feel like their parent now because I worry about their every health complaint and illness, but I get no thanks in return. Just a lot of attitude and lip. Oh, and the buggers are running off to Spain shortly as well.

I guess attitude towards the NHS depends on performance of the local health authority, but I've got no complaints here. Over the past year, I've had ear surgery, a benign growth removed from my leg, A&E treatment for a dog bite, and over a dozen consultations (combined) with my GP and consultants (cripes, this has been a terrible year for me healthwise!), and facilities, service & care have been top-notch.

Walker and Midi

Watching your parents age isn't easy. My Mom has had a lot of health issues this year and it's been hard to see her lose some of her mobility. sometimes it's hard to deal with when she becomes cranky and impatient but I can see where it's coming from. She's always been really active, but she's had to slow down and reduce her activities because of pain. I'm just glad she's nearby so I can do things for her. I can't imagine being far away and not able to help.
