My Mood: SL Join Date: 8/23/2007 Blog Entries: 1 | I've had a Kindle for several months now, and adore it. I find that it's quite easy on my eyes, and I've not had any trouble converting files I've found online. And yes, it does PDF, too. I use the thing like a fiend, so I'd be glad to answer any questions you have about it. :-) |

Yes, you have to convert PDFs first. You can do it wirelessly for a charge of .10, or send it to Amazon via email for a free conversion (however, I was never charged for the first several I did the day I received mine; don't know if that was a mistake or what). Both conversions happen very quickly, in my experience. Every PDF I've converted thus far looks good. The Kindle doesn't convert .lit docs to my knowledge. However, there are third party conversion tools people use to get the .lit files on the Kindle. A good source for Kindle tips is MobileRead Forums . I've also owned the 1st generation Sony Ebook reader, which also works very well. However, the free 3G wireless on the Kindle makes it the preferable choice for me. The Kindle also has a web browser (it's limited, but works fairly well; I've even plurked using it) and the ability to play music files. It also allows you to take notes on what you read, and has a dictionary so you can look up any big, scary words you might come across. Finally, it has a weird text-to-speech function that I can't really tolerate. I use the hell out of mine, and it's perfect for travel, which made it worth the price for me. | |
