But but but... the spiders are eating all the other bugs and flies. Keeping the pollen beetles down too

I always say...if they're not paying rent, they're not living in my home. Flypaper can take care of the flies in the house. The spiders need to stay outside and stop the flies from getting in in the first place.

Our child is strange and wonderful.

We're getting a second phone line because my wife now works at home too, and we find ourselves clamoring to be in long bullshit conference calls. This weekend we were trying to plan out how this could best work.

Me: "Kid, you know our current home number right?"

she started dancing and singing a jingle "XXX-XX06, and that's what you dial for free cat sex!".

I paused and asked "what the hell exactly is wrong with you?"

we both laughed at that point. I sure love her.

TSA Humor

So I arrive at Dulles airport and the car service driver drops me off at the doorway that clearly says Southwest but once I'm inside there is no SW counter to be seen. I turn to a TSA agent waiting to take checked baggage and ask where it is.

Asshole TSA agent: "Oh, they don't fly out of here anymore. Last flight was at 8am."

Beebo: (instant stomach cramp)

Bystander: He's just kidding

Beebo: (fighting down wave of nausea)

Asshole TSA agent: Ha ha. Just adding some humor to your day. They're around the corner.

Yeah, but just try adding some humor to one of their days, and see if you don't get the full-body grope, and the long-form interview.

And there used to be an old superstition about spiders that my gran believed in. Which meant that one time when my granda stamped on one she yelled

"DON'T - spiders are lucky!"

Without missing a beat he replied "That one wasn't".

My granda was awesome

So after a long day of chasing after the nephew and changing diapers and keeping him from stuffing everything in the house down his gullet, I get relieved by his grandparents and promptly haul my ass and my kindle to the local chinese buffet for some sweet, sweet, quiet reading time... alone.

Just as I'm finishing Fortune's Stroke, sitting in a booth looking like a big sissy crying because Belisarius and Antonica get reunited, Irene finally finds someone that can keep up with her in Kungas, and Shakuntala and Rhagunath Rao finally get over the whole 'we can't be together because of blood/dharma~' thing running through the last 3 books, I realized something.

I think I'm fundamentally broken. I read like hell. And without fail, I read melodramatic fiction. The hero(ine) doesn't give up, despite the constant sacrifices they must make. Life hammers at them, over and over and over, but despite the pain they never give up. They find love, then get it torn away, but then fight and persevere until things work out, in the end.

I can sit down and read a book, and literally begin crying over these fictional characters. But when it comes to me and my life, I can't seem to dredge up any enthusiasm or passion. There's no particular thing I want to 'do' with my life, that I've found anyway. I can't seem to form/sustain friendships. Much less romance. And it vaguely bothers me, constantly. But I can't figure out what I should do to change it.

I don't really know why I typed this up. Wanted to 'put it down' somewhere, I guess. It's not as if I have anyone locally I could bring this up with without them giving me bug eyes. Some days I think I'm just fated to be a techno-hermit.

one day your hero(ine) will find you .. and then the two of you can come arm in arm and read this together .. and laugh at that it ever was a problem.

Hmm this sounds so familiar. I've been addicted to reading since I was about 10. I like best novels about really smart, but also brave, people who face trials and obstacles but reach their goal in the end and live happily ever after.

I liked going out a lot when I was in my teens, twenties and early 30's but still spent a lot of time alone reading. Then gradually I was staying home alone more and hanging with other people less and less.

Just when I got to the point that I hardly went out or did much but read I met my true love. If I'm honest with myself I have to admit that at this point, if it weren't for him I'd probably hardly ever go out and wouldn't have any one to socialize with in rl.

I sometimes wonder if my reading addiction is a problem... But I have to conquer the ice cream addiction first.

I wish I had good advise for you, Seyla. But at least I can say that reading is a pretty benign past time and I find I do learn things, even from works of fiction.

I'm getting my wisdom teeth taken out in a couple hours and I woke up with my spring allergies in full swing. I'm terrified of the dentist and now I feel crappy, too. It's going to be a good day.
