Oh Rain, that's rough :hugs:

Take little steps, make sure you get out of the house every day, just to keep up the social interaction. It will pass.

Congratulations, Flipper! As it happens something very similar happened to me; I've been thinking about posting about it and now I have done so. Yay us!

Still patent lawyering, just for a company instead of a law firm. The offer came from a client who liked the work I did as his outside counsel. It's a bit different from your typical in-house patent job - there may be some unusual opportunities to get involved in different aspects of business development if I want them. I don't want to say too much more because I don't know who's reading.

One thing I like about it is the boss's attitude about patents - he believes that if an invention is worth patenting, it's worth patenting properly, and he understands that writing a really good patent application takes time and thought. It would be quite a refreshing change from the typical law firm scenario, where the firm is pressuring you to get the billable hours up, while the clients want to patent everything and don't want to pay for patenting anything.

Anyway I don't have a formal offer yet, so I don't want to jinx it. But when the formal offer comes I am pretty sure I will take it.

I'm incredibly down today.

I've been hanging on thru a reorg/outsource rollercoaster at work because I really enjoy what I do.

The reorg is a massive political clusterfuck. The results won't be based on anything substantive, so it doesn't matter that I'm really good at what I do and that I provide a critical service that no one who actually does the work wants to disappear.

And the worst part is that I can't get any reliable information about what's going on. Today one of the directors told me that another had told him I'd been briefed on transitioning part of my role back to the outsourcing company - it was news to me.

The part that's making me crazy is not having a time line. My finances are recovering from paying medical bills, so I'm not as flush as usual. Regardless of they do it in two weeks, Nov or Dec, I will be laid off in the worst part of the year, while the economy is tanking.

Finally, the 80lbs I gained on the drugs pre-surgery means I can't get my ass in my business suit. So to even go on an interview, I have to find a fat girl suit... which realistically will cost at a minimum $200.

The worst part is the suit, and knowing that being overweight still makes people think you're stupid and lazy.

Perfect for a highly-competative economy.

Big hugs, Surreal - I know how maddening that kind of uncertainty is and how it can affect one's job performance and well-being to be a potential lame duck. I also know about buying fat-girl professional clothes. There are really nice well-tailored things out there, which is certainly way better than it used to be (I wear a lot of Eileen Fisher) but it can be really expensive and that's not when you need when you are weathering this kind of uncertainty. Hugs.

Anyone who has seen your work knows your talented; anyone who has spoken to you know how kind and professional you are (not to mention, bi-lingual!). You'll find something soon!

Congrats, Madhu! That sounds fantastic for you, I'm really happy.

Surreal: this place has always managed to keep you around. It is obvious they love you, and I'm convinced they'll make efforts to keep you there. If not, your talent is impossible NOT to see.

Regards,

-Flip

Been there - done that.
Doing contract work in the auto industry is a bitch right now.
Haven't been able to break out of the box I'm stuck in. Still trying though.

to you both. Trying to find work in this economy is hard right now. I am sure you will both find something soon. Just think positive and try not to freak out about getting rejected a lot.

I'm going through a similar situation with this bank merger so I can empathize. I won't know until the end of firstQ 2010 if I'll keep my job or not. The waiting is so hard.
