A little bit of childhood is gone

The dismantling of Shea Stadium began on Monday morning. Buildings in New York can't be imploded by law, so it will be taken down the old fashioned way.

Workers begin dismantling Shea Stadium -- Newsday.com

Even though a brand new stadium is right next door, the one coming down was literally a part of my neighborhood growing up. After the Mets were elimnated Sunday, they had a closing ceremony where some of the favorite players in the teams history came back. They all lined up on the field and each one touched home plate for the last time At the end, Mike Piazza and Tom Seaver, probably the 2 greatest players to wear the Orange and Blue walked out through the Centerfield gate and closed it behind them. As silly s it seems I was bawling like a baby by that point.
Anyway....for all the baseball fans out there, and for their own long gone Cathedrals of Baseball.

I know how you feel. Last year they dismantled the Miami Orange Bowl.

Nothing compared to the electricity in that place. My fondest childhood memories were going to Dolphins and Miami Hurricane games there.

I was fortunate enough to be there for one of the Dolphins perfect season games, the epic Chargers-Dolphins playoff game, the national championship when the Hurricanes upset Nebraska and the Doug Flutie Hail Mary.

Detroit's Tiger Stadium was finally demolished this year. It had been looted clean though.

GG Detroiters.

Why did it take so long? Is the new stadium not nearby? Usually the old one becomes parking.

New stadium is quite a ways away, Brenda. It's more downtown, with the Lions' new stadium next to it.

A lot of folks were trying to come up with a plan to save at least part of it for some purpose. That's been the issue - don't need a vacant lot there.

Did a lot of ball games there - took my girls a lot. When you turned six, you got to go to a ballgame - with just Dad. For my oldest two, that was their first game. Good memories - and they all love their Tigers.
