| Tell Hex about Seattle. Hex might be moving to Seattle (or Boston, or Minneapolis, but he has those covered) and thinks people here might know something about it. Please tell Hex. (P.S. Can Hex see Russia from there?) |

My Mood: | You can see Russia from Seattle in the comfort of your own home - all you need is an internet connection and basic Google skills. Seattle is a great place to live, overall. Pros: 1) Good music scene and nightlife. 2) Beautiful setting, close to the water, mountains, etc. 3) Great public parks. 4) Very liberal political leanings (see also:cons) 5) I think the job market is pretty strong, but I'm not 100% sure 6) Lots of nearby activities. Cons: 1) Housing prices are very high 2) Very liberal politics 3) Snotty, elitist, self-entitled attitude regarding the rest of the State. 4) Mariners and Seahawks are your local pro teams. The word "Sonics" makes people burst into tears, as if they were a great loss to the city. Overall, I wouldn't live anywhere else in the nation besides Western Washington. That's just my heavily biased opinion, of course, but I love it here. I wouldn't live in Seattle, though. I'm happier in a small town within driving distance of Seattle. I can be at the ocean in a couple hours, in the mountains in half an hour. The seafood is way better than in a lot of places. I can go to the marina and buy a salmon off the boat for $3.00/pound that was just caught that morning. |

I will destroy you with my
mind
| Personally, I wouldn't live in any city that would allow those dolts to set up shop.

I work in Seattle and live in North Bend. It's a very small (once logging) town. If you saw Twin Peaks or Northern Exposure, you've seen North Bend. I disagree that all housing costs are spendy. It really depends on whether you want to be in DT Seattle or Bellevue/Redmond (both of which I'd pass on personally). I also don't think Washington is any different than any other state re: #3 on your cons. I hear it for Oregon, Colorado, etc... we just know the areas here better so it hits closer to home. I've been here for 42 years, have traveled the world and lived all over the place with a past job. I always come back to Washington. It's the people that make this place a home for me. | |

My Mood: | Geez - I don't know. Housing in and around Seattle is ridiculously expensive. I don't know what it is in North bend, though, and I agree that there are plenty of areas around Seattle where you can find a place and just commute into Seattle. Traffic can be pretty bad, though. I guess I don't mind backing down on the housing issue. On my #3 issue, I may not have phrased that well. I didn't mean Washington's attitude. I mean Seattle's attitude towards the rest of Washington. It's like the city of Seattle doesn't recognize that there is a whole state of people who have needs and opinions surrounding them. They feel like, since they are the only big city (tacoma and Spokane be damned) that they should be able to make the decisions for the poor, stupid redneck slobs living in SW or Eastern Washington, and that we should foot the bill for their excesses. It really bugs me. I guess, as an Olympian, I feel that the rest of the state matters and I don't like to feel marginalized just because I'm not some elite Seattleite. I've never seen anyone from Seattle admit it, but I've heard a lot of complaints from people outside of Seattle, and especially from Eastern Washington. At any rate, I don't want to exaggerate the problem, because it's not that big of a deal - it's just a perception I have that sticks in my craw. It certainly isn't so awful that it should discourage people from coming here. |
