Steve Fossett story about to conclude?

'Steve Fossett items' possibly found in California: police

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Items possibly belonging to missing aviator Steve Fossett have been found by hikers in a remote area of California more than one year after his mysterious disappearance, police said Wednesday.

Mammoth Lakes Police Department chief Randy Schienle, told CNN that items including an identity card bearing Fossett's name had been handed to authorities after being discovered on Tuesday.

"They found some miscellaneous ID and actually some cash in the area, and the ID has the name of Steve Fossett on it," Schienle told CNN.

"We're not certain that it belongs to Steve Fossett but it certainly has his name on the ID which are some miscellaneous pilots and/or aircraft licenses."

I saw this story and wondered what the extent of his personal things were. I'd like to find his wallet. I bet the guy carried a nice wad of cash around.

It's my understanding that they haven't found any wreckage yet. The Sierras are about as rugged as any mountain range anywhere, so who knows what is hidden in there. I'd like to see them find something conclusive enough to give his family some closure. I'm sure everyone accepts that he is dead, but it's nice to get that final info about what happened and where.

Yeah, I'm sure his wife would be happy not just for the closure, but for an end to all the conspiracy theories going around. I seem to recall her making an appeal for an end to them a couple of months ago.

The guy who found the clothes and ID cards did find a considerable amount of money apparently.

If it had been me, then the guy who found the stuff would have found clothes and ID cards and, strangely enough, there would have been no sign of cash anywhere.

I'm not sure how I would explain the sudden infusion of cash in my bank account to the IRS, but for damned sure, I didn't find it in Steve Fossett's wallet! Nope.

They've now found his plane, but not his body.

From the description of the impact, his body could have been thrown anywhere within a quarter mile from the wreckage. Given the rough terrain, it will be difficult to find remains a year later.

I think I'm stupid. I don't know who Steve Fossett is. Should I care or has that boat sailed already?

Steve Fossett was one of those billionaire playboy adventurers like...dang, can't remember his name...the guy who owns the Virgin labels. He was always trying to break records like flying a helium balloon around the world and things like that - always pushing the envelope with balloons, gliders, sailboats, etc. He was sort of an inspiration to a lot of people to reach for their dreams.

He disappeared a while ago while flying a small plane. He's been missing since, and even though it was pretty clear that he had crashed, there were all sorts of conspiracy theories about him faking his death.

You've made me wonder if he's more famous in the UK (perhaps through the Branson connection) than in the US now.

Well more than trying ... succeeding.
