When Deutsch responded, "It would be better if we were all Christian?" Coulter said "Yeah."

Deutsch, himself Jewish, continued to press Coulter on her remarks, asking, "We should just throw Judaism away and we should all be Christians then?"

"Yeah," Coulter responded, adding "Well, it's a lot easier. It's kind of a fast track."

"You can't possibly believe that," Deutsch responded. “You can’t possibly. You’re too educated.”

"Do you know what Christianity is?" Coulter replied. "See, we believe your religion, but you have to obey. We have the fast track program."

Later in the interview Deutsch asked Coulter if she doesn't want any Jews in the world, Coulter responded, "No, we think — we just want Jews to be perfected, as they say."

"Wow, you didn't really say that, did you," Deutsch said.

"Yeah, no,” Coulter replied. “That’s what Christianity is. We believe the Old Testament, but ours is more like Federal Express. You have to obey laws. We know we're all sinners."

Deutsch said he was personally offended.

"No. I'm sorry. It is not intended to be," she said. "I don't think you should take it that way, but that is what Christians consider themselves: perfected Jews. We believe the Old Testament. As you know from the Old Testament, God was constantly getting fed up with humans for not being able to live up to all the laws. What Christians believe — this is just a statement of what the New Testament is — is that that's why Christ came and died for our sins. Christians believe the Old Testament. You don't believe our testament."

Deutsch continued to call Coulter's comments anti-semetic.

"No, no, — I don't want you being offended by this," she responded. "This is what Christians consider themselves, because our testament is the continuation of your testament. You know that. So we think Jews go to heaven. I mean, [the late Rev. Jerry] Falwell himself said that, but you have to follow laws. Ours is "Christ died for our sins." We consider ourselves perfected Christians. For me to say that for you to become a Christian is to become a perfected Christian is not offensive at all."

I still can't get past the gefilte fish and the Shabbas elevator nonsense, so I see where Ann is coming from.

PS - I didn't think she could top her 9/11 widow comments, but methinks she has.

Unfortunately, Coulter is extrapolating a erroneous conclusion from Christian teachings that many who profess the faith believe. Christians do believe that sin is not cleansed by following a strict set of laws, but by faith in God, personified in Jesus of Nazareth.

The flaw comes in the idea that this belief is somehow 'better' than other people's beliefs. As has been discussed countless times before, religion is a very personal concept. What works for you spiritually does not necessarily work for everyone else...or possibly *anyone* else.

What Coulter is spouting is arrogant and wrongheaded. It is also sadly typical of any fundamentalist.

Pushing buttons is considered work so you can't do it on the sabbath or something like that.

Orthodox Jews can't operate electrical things on Shabbas (The Sabbath) --so they "hire" a non-jew to do things like turn on their lights or press elevator buttons on the Sabbath.

I used to live in a hirise that had a lot of Jewish residents, and they would designate one of the elevators the Shabbas elevator for the Sabbath. It would automatically stop on every floor, so that they could ride the elevator and get around the technicality of operating machinery (crafty!). Unfortunately, it would only be marked in the lobby not on the upper floors, and invariably I would always get stuck in it, and I lived on the 34th floor.

You mention electrical so I will suppose computer games and using the telephone or cellphone count. So say a radio that was left on a bad station can't be tuned to another one for example?

Curious, what other very ordinary activities regarded by most as non-work are considered work by orthodox Jews for purposes of Shabbas?

I just wonder sometimes about why it is that idiots get so much air time and press. They don't deserve it.

There should be lolcats alongside stories like this when they show up in the paper and news sites. That might make them palateable.

I don't find Ann Coulter's psycho-babble to be shocking any more than I find the senile old man in my apartment building to be shocking when he shouts obscenities in the hallway: both have brain damage. What is shocking is that a a major news network like CNBC invites Coulter to make comments. Of course, I am not actually shocked by that either, as CNBC is owned by a hugh corporation that couldn't care less about presenting news, they only care about ratings.

doesn't judaism believe that jews are the chosen people? that's what some of my jewish friends tell me.

ann coulter is a crazy lady but isn't she right that christianity believes it's a perfected judaism? it might be uncouth to say but wasn't that really what jesus was all about?

i'm not jewish or cristian so i don't know as much about these religions. my experience is that all religions at their best respect all the other religions but think their own is more correct.
