Audio Version of the ''Dress''

Is This Voice Saying 'Yanny' or 'Laurel'? Here's the Only Real Answer

Quote:
Work ceased for several minutes at Gizmodo Media this afternoon as everyone stopped to listen to a four-second sound file of someone either saying “laurel” or “yanny.” No one could agree. I heard “laurel.”

No joke, this question divided staff, with many insisting the other side couldn’t possibly be hearing what they claimed. It’s essentially an audio version of the god-forsaken dress. But how could people hear such different words in the same sound file? You probably won’t be surprised to learn it has a lot to do with you as an individual.

...

(I hear Laurel, although the very first 'Laurel' sounded like Yaurel.)

I distinctly hear Yanny with no "L" sound at all. Very weird! haha

I heard Yanny on the first repeat, then an amalgamation of the two, and now all I can hear is Laurel.

Sounds like 'Laurel' to me like in the Laurel part in 'Laurel and Hardy'.

huh, weird. I hear only Laurel. Nothing but Laurel. Not even some vague word that I'm converting to Laurel because it's similar enough to it.

Mind, going in with a 'do you hear x or y' leads me to listen for x or y. It should have been 'here, listen to this' *thing plays*, what do you hear? I do not think I heard Laurel because I was told I might, but . . . how knows now, eh?

Laurel, with a very exaggerated and emphasized L in the beginning.

I've tried my best to hear Yanny and I can't really do it.

For what it's worth it's a very low pitched bassy voice, somewhat synthetic, and I feel like if I listen to it enough I'll hear a high pitched voice saying Yanny instead, I just can't pick it out, but I can hear a high pitched "---anny" mixed in, super-imposed toward the end.

But the Laurel is just up front in your face, like, LAUREL.

I've pitch shifted the sound clip down and now it magically says "Yanny" instead. If you can't hear Yanny, try listening to this, then listen to the original clip and magically the original clip will say Yanny too.

i just just had this experience!

the first time i listened to it i only heard laurel, but... i just came back now and played the sound again and heard “yanny” the first time, then a “mix” of yanny and laurel the second time it repeated... and then the third time (and every time after) i only heard laurel over and over again. And couldn’t get “yanny” back.

buuuut when i played for me this time i was on wifi and my cellphone. So i wonder if the buffering/some sort of lag to the load time caused me to heard yanny... then once the sound repeated on a normal speed i heard laurel properly, which i’m sure is what must be being said since to the best of my knowledge “yanny” isn’t a word.

Pitch down says yanny, but the original still says laurel after listening for me.

Over my headphones, I hear Laurel all the time.
I bet if you use speakers or a headphone with low amount of bass set, you hear Yanny instead. Or just use an equalizer to turn off ze bass.

EDIT:
Hummh. No luck so far with that.

So the whole point of this illusion is that everyone's ear canals are slightly different, so some will lean toward one interpretation and and others to the other.

But, for most people, this sound clip won't be ambiguous enough to flipflop.

I've messed with the pitch enough to find a clip that is right in the middle for my ears, to the point where if I listen to a clip higher or lower pitched and then go back to my neutral one, it will sound like whichever extreme I heard right before.

But the one going viral leans far too much toward LAURAL for me, and always sounds like Laural even if I prompt myself on extremely down pitched YANNY's first.

Both sounds are contained within the sound clip, but your brain picks one or the other since it can't handle dealing with both. I was hearing yanny earlier, but now it's laurel, and I've listened it on everything from a phone to full range equipment; it is just a massive brain troll.

Large periods of time between listening and thinking about it helps switching what you hear.

That version sounds like 'Yelly'.

And the original still sounds like 'Laurel' -- I can't hear it as anything else.

So, thats crazy.

I opened it again, to test you though. My phone was turned down, so I turned it up, and I heard the end of Laurel, then immidiately, Yanny.

We built a tool to gradually accentuate different frequencies in the original audio clip. Which word or name do you hear, and how far do you have to move the slider to hear the other? (The slider’s center point represents the original recording.)
Since it does have to do with pitch, some have said that age can also be a factor since we tend to lose the ability to hear higher pitched noise as we get older.

On a side note, I also think it's fun that it all started with an 18 year old highschool student just trying to complete a project.
