I'm not dead yet!

Hi.

I've been rather absent for a while. Some of you might remember that Other Half had a severe accident in September. If not, then yeah. Bicycle accident, faceplant, yadda. Can't really divulge much else about that because attorney.

Gory details of the injuries include such gems as:

1. Three crushed vertebrae in the spine - one that also constricted almost to paralysis levels, and could leave Other Half paralyzed if there's another fall.
2. Two broken neck bones, including the all important neck swiveler C1 Vertebrae. That's the one where if they do surgery on it, you can never turn your head again. So far, it seems healed.
3. Maxilla broken from the skull. If you aren't aware, the maxilla is the upper part of your jaw. The bit that doesn't move up and down when you eat.
4. Nose broken in three places.
5. Broken occipital bone (bit over one eyebrow)
6. Lost front tooth. Actually incisor and an adjacent tooth.
7. The gnarliest Walking Dead looking road rash on the right side of the face
8. Two of the most spectacular actually black black eyes.
9. Various lacerations on the legs
10. Broken rib

Let's see, that about covers the first night in ER, well except for the broken back part. We didn't find out about that till about six weeks into recovery.

Surgery was fun. It included having the skull pinned in places, including reconstructing the upper part of the jaw, and rebuilding the nose. Jaw was banded shut for a week, but Other Half was on a liquid diet for six weeks. That's a hell of a diet plan. Other Half lost something like 35 pounds.

We had disability till Jan. 28. Other Half got laid off about a month after the accident, so was recovering, and unable to look for a job till we knew exactly the extend of the injuries.

Other Half was cleared for work on Jan. 28. Landed a job on Jan. 22 and then signed the offer after the doc gave the okay to work.

In the meantime, I've been absent from SL and here, as well as Facebook (no loss there) for almost five months. Life was really stressful, and still is.

The first three months, I spent a lot of time taking time off work to care for other half, driving us to all the various doctor appointments, surgery, physical therapy, the psychologist (because depressed, and understandably so), and generally driving for the sake of getting Other Half the hell out of the house because it's illegal for folks to drive while wearing a neck brace.

I'm super thankful that (a) Other Half didn't die and (b) I had ten year's worth of accumulated sick leave and (c) medical insurance.

(d) is the spectacular dental insurance that paid for half of a dental implant (pending). In about three more months, Other Half will have a new front tooth.

I'd like to get back into SL but haven't really felt very much motivation to. I lurk here from time to time, but involvement has been minimal because reasons.

My main escape from reality lately is Pokemon Go. I have a solid Mystic Mafia group of friends I raid with and whatnot.

When the time comes I can talk about some of the legal stuff. I just can't right now.

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Holy shit, that's terrifyingly horrific! But the good news is, it sounds like Other Half is on the mend. I hope for continued, speedy recovery with no "gotchas".

Welcome back! *hugs*

We've missed you (and will continue to) but Other Half is more important than us.

Other Half lays on the couch watching Netflix quite a lot of the time, because it's easier than actually doing stuff right now. The back pain is more or less under control, unless there's a lot of movement.

Other Half is a different person now. More clingy, yet distant. We don't talk much. We mostly just sit in silence, occasionally saying "I Love You" or something. There's no going back to previous hobbies, unfortunately. Too much fear.

I figure it's going to be a really long recovery time, even after all the bones are completely healed, and the back stops hurting quite so much. Psychological mess and all that.

Zzzquil is my best friend most nights, because it makes me conk out quick, and I somehow don't remember the dreams as vividly. Apart from stressed, I'm actually okay. Can't complain.

Still alive, as the subject line implies.

I did learn that a medium pepperoni pizza with extra sauce on it triggers my seatbelt alarm. I learned this while Other Half was sleeping between coming home from ER and going in the next week for Maxillofacial surgery.

That's the thing that goes "BONG BONG BONG" if the seatbelt isn't fastened for someone in the car.

The pizza apparently weighed as much as a small person, making my car think it forgot to put on its seatbelt.

That's either a very heavy pizza or a sensitive alarm.

I'm impressed that OH is already back to work (Not terribly impressed by the previous employer who laid OH off)
Take it easy, both of you. That's a hell of a recovery. Even your seatbelt alarm is stressed out of its mind!

LOL.

Seriously.

But it's still a long road. It takes three months for vertebrae to heal, as it turns out.

Yeah, when I injured my back it took about that long to get out of the brace.
