When does adolescence end?

Should we consider adolescence to last until age 24?
Quote:
Compared to earlier generations, youth today are staying in school longer, marrying and having kids later, and buying a house later, writes Susan Sawyer, the chair of adolescent health at the University of Melbourne, in an op-ed published today in the journal The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health. The transition period from childhood to adulthood lasts far beyond age 19, when it is popularly thought to end. As a result, she writes, we should change our policies and services to better serve this population.

Sawyer is hardly the first to notice these lifestyle changes. In 2010, The New York Times published a much-read article about how the experience of being a 20-something is changing. As the piece noted, adolescence itself is a social construct, and a century ago there was no such thing.
I'm undecided on where I come down on this. I desire input!

The article doesn't say what policies she has in mind. Do these include the age you are allowed to sign a contract, to buy liquor and cigarettes or have to sign up for the draft?

I imagine it should include all of that. And more. But maybe not hard lined across the board?

Most English magistrates would, I think, agree with that.

But how would they codify it as law and enforce it?

A study I just pulled out of my ass says with definitive authority that internet use reduces maturity by 33.3%.

Studies like that, geez. If it had only been 33.4% they wouldn't have to say almost a third.

The frontal cerebral cortex synapsis mature in the 25th year. I witnessed this miraculous event in my son. He became logical overnight and woke up one day and it occurred to him being a pizza delivery driver was not a prosperous life path. 18 months later he's a mortgage broker and happy as a clam in mud.

Well, we have plenty of laws against being drunk and disorderly, brawling in public, stealing cars and "joyriding," and the like, and young folks keep both the magistrates and the Crown Courts pretty busy with those.

ETA: More seriously, I think most young men calm down a lot somewhere between their early and mid-20s. If they hit 30 and are still committing what might be called "young men's offences" it's normally a good indicator that they'll be troubling the courts for a long time to come.

As a serious topic of discussion, has it ever been studied formally if there is a large percentage of the population stuck in this development period?

You often hear about mentally disabled people functioning like an 5 year old, but there has got to be a legion of undiagnosed cases of people still teenagers at +40.

I've read cops saying that cases of swatting often originate to a 42 year old guy in pokemon pajamas living in his mom's basement. That stereotype actually does happen and I've never heard of it being formally studied. Some quick google searches mostly just turned up opinion pieces.

I mostly agree with what others have said about how it seems to more or less end (normally) at 25 or so. I think I woke out of my libertarian extremist phase at around 26. In hindsight, it was kind of just an awkward way to transition from the Republican I was raised to be, to being a Democrat.

A recovered evangelical Tory empathizes with this.

Is that what "adulthood" means? No more education, buying property, getting married and having children? Because that means there's a whole lot of people who never become adults their entire lives while still being completely mature, stable and successful in life.

Thanks to SL and Opensim, I know people in their 50's and 60's who adolescence apparently never ended for
