The topic of this thread actually reminds me of something I read once...I think? If I'm remembering right it's definitely relevant, but I'm sleepy so I'll look it up tomorrow and get back to you guys on it.

Honestly the older I get the more I realize adults are all just making it up as they go.

Oh right, I am an adult too.

I probably said this already early on.

All joking aside, this is a VERY important thing for kids to learn. New people at my job who aren't great problem solvers have a tendency to always have to ask people like me how to do everything. They don't realize that often enough, I've never seen it before either. I just make up an answer. Obviously, the answer has to be logical enough to actually work! But I improvise constantly rather than have everything memorized.

Bonus points if you've already tried Google to no avail before calling support so you can be confounded together.

That article is just mind-boggling to me. The teen years are just what they are--TEEN. A 24 year-old is too damn old and is an adult. That is what is wrong with a lot of adults in college---people keep calling them kids and they are not. The kids are in high school and lower, which these damn crazy adults are trying to act like just because they are immature. I saw on one talk show, some guy in his twenties had a girlfriend who was fifteen. And he didn't think anything of it, because as he put it, "he is young too". Give me a f**king break. People, you can't have it both ways. One minute you want people to consider you an adult so you can drink, have your own place, get a job, independence, etc. Then when shit hits the fan, then you want to talk about still being young and you're just a "kid". That article is crazy as hell. Any of my peers still think that they are at the budding stage of adolescence, they need to stay the hell away from me.

Hmm.

Quote:
Adolescence begins with the onset of physiologically normal puberty, and ends when an adult identity and behaviour are accepted. This period of development corresponds roughly to the period between the ages of 10 and 19 years, which is consistent with the World Health Organizationís definition of adolescence.

Those responsible for providing healthcare to adolescents must allow sufficient flexibility in this age span to encompass special situations such as the emancipated minor or the young person with a chronic condition leading to delayed development or prolonged dependency.

Adolescence these days starts at age 10 and continues to 24, scientists say | Fox News

'Adolescence now lasts from 10 to 24' - BBC News

Adolescent development
Key points
  • Adolescence is one of the most rapid phases of human development.
  • Biological maturity precedes psychosocial maturity. This has implications for policy and programme responses to the exploration and experimentation that takes place during adolescence.
  • The characteristics of both the individual and the environment influence the changes taking place during adolescence.
  • Younger adolescents may be particularly vulnerable when their capacities are still developing and they are beginning to move outside the confines of their families.
  • The changes in adolescence have health consequence not only in adolescence but also over the life-course.
  • The unique nature and importance of adolescence mandates explicit and specific attention in health policy and programmes.
WHO | Adolescent development

Which only confirms my belief that not everyone is both physically and mentally mature by the time they reach age 24.

They'd better stay off my lawn, no matter how old they are.

Controversial opinion that would never actually be implemented but would almost certainly be effective:

At the age of 12 to 14, all boys and girls get a 10 year birth-control implant. This gives them time to fully grow up and build a stable life without passing on the impacts of their impulsive mistakes to the next generation. At the time it expires, if they’ve managed to get through life without being convicted of a violent felony, it’s removed and they are full adults. If not, they get another one lasting 5 years, after which they are reevaluated again. I believe we could practically end generational poverty if young people were free to complete their educations and build careers without the spectre or reality of unplanned parenthood hanging over their heads.

Wow this thread really opens my eyes somehow.

When I was 17 I graduated from high school and went to a foreign "college" to learn homemaking. When I was 18 I got married, went to work at a job that involved a slide rule and a typewriter, and began shopping, cooking, cleaning and doing laundry for my new spouse.

Fair warning: I'm old and crotchety.

I think it's a serious problem that the world has come to this. Instead of talking about extending childhood we should be insisting that parents prepare their children to accept the responsibilities of adulthood when adulthood inevitably arrives at the end of puberty or sooner. As a society we should be providing parents with all the support they need. And we should be treating all adults as adults no matter what they're doing including furthering their educations.

Bringing back Home Ec and Vocational programs to schools would be a start.
