How 'bout this balmy weather we're having?

I don't know how it's been for you in your region, but the holidays were spectacular here, cold and snow-wise. It was actually pretty amazing.

This is the worst cold snap we've had in a few years. Of course.... the last few winters were especially mild, so it could just be back to the true norm.

I'm not sure what is going on, weather-wise. I'm still waiting for winter to begin here. We had a cold snap where overnight temps dropped below freezing a couple of weeks ago, but otherwise it's been very mild. We almost hit 70 today!

Do you think between your weather and my weather, we can meet somewhere in the middle?

You must be in the western half of the country. This map color codes the temperature difference from normal, with brown being at normal.

It was 71 here today.

Now, that sounds like paradise, but it's a real problem for us. Between the unusually warm temperatures and the general lack of rain so far this season, there is no snow in the mountains. The mountain snowpack is where most of our water comes from. Without snow, especially on the heels of the drought we recently went through, we're in big trouble.

Michigan pizzeria sent from heaven will deliver a pie and plow your driveway for $30

Quote:
Watching the snow fall and fall outside the pizzeria’s windows for the past few weeks, he wondered if he shouldn’t leave the restaurant and fire up the plow. But he was reticent to leave the pizzeria duties all to his wife, so he found a way to deliver both pies and plowing.

“I’m not that smart, but I figured, why not do both?” Glorioso told The Takeout.

For $30, he’ll deliver a large, one-topping pizza and clear your driveway with the plow hooked up to his 2004 Chevrolet Silverado truck.

Well, the water finally froze last night.

After I turned it on, of course.

Looks like basin baths for us for a couple of weeks. . .

We've been in the minus 30s and less with the wind chill almost every night during the holidays.

Montrealers, you survived 1 of the longest cold streaks on record - CBC
Quote:
From Dec. 27 to Jan. 1, the maximum temperature in Montreal did not rise above –17 C. This six-day stretch is the longest such cold streak on record, based on data going back 146 years.
And after a storm and temperature respite of 1 day, we went down again till now. Weeeee......

At one point, walking home, I was keeping one eye closed as one does and the rest of my face covered in my scarf when the humidity of my breath covered and froze my eyelid shut. Never had that happen before. Tiny icicles on my lashes, sure, but never that. Anyway, it's been wild, but I'm glad it's going back to normal minus teens.

As for Australia, they're going through record-breaking hot weather.

Australia hit by 'catastrophic weather' so hot the roads are melting
Quote:
Emergency services in southeast Australia are warning people to stay indoors as a dangerous heatwave batters the country, with temperatures so high that the asphalt on some roads has been melting.

...

Temperatures are expected to exceed 40°C in the southeast, with the country's Bureau of Meteorology forecasting highs of 45°C in Penrith, 44°C in Richmond and 43°C in Liverpool, with much of the area being rated as 'catastrophic' or 'code red' by emergency services.

I agree 45C (113F) is pretty darned hot. But asphalt-melting hot? We go through temperatures pretty close to this every summer here in central California. But I guess if you're not used to it, it can feel pretty bad, though.
