This is the hardest thing you will ever do. My advice, at least at the early stages, is to give in to whatever auxilliary cravings you're having. Sating them will give you less to fret about. And much , and understand how bad it is -- I quit a 3 pack a day habit cold turkey in 2005 and have never regretted it, but it was the toughest thing I've ever done. I know former crackheads who can't quit tobacco.

Stick with it, it'll get easier. Promise.

My coworker was a long-time smoker - absolutely loved loved loved the whole thing. But she quit cold turkey and never looked back. Her philosophy on it was that it's only difficult because people believe it is. She didn't believe it would be difficult to quit, and it wasn't, for her. She says she still craves it, but has not had a drag since. It's been three? Four? years.

I quit about 10 years ago. It wasn't easy, but I made myself remember all the nasty stuff whenever I wanted a puff -- like waking up in the morning hacking my lungs up, lack of stamina, can't taste food, and having my clothes and house reek of smoke.

It took about 3 solid months for me to finally get over the cravings, but it was more than worth it. Best thing I ever did for myself, bar none.

Don't waver, Trin. You'll look back on this one day and count it as a life-changing decision.

Just Because I Love You

Thanks everyone for the stories, the support and the kindness. I have never been more determined to quit than I am now. I know the withdrawals are temporary. I'm fed up with getting bronchitis every year. I'm tired of coughing all the time. I'm sick of every aspect of it. I have a jar full of jelly bellies. I have cinnamon sticks for the drive to and from work. Now if I could just shake the heebie jeebies, I'd be a lot happier.

I'll keep everyone up to date on the progress in the weeks to come. Thank you for helping me to hold myself accountable.

I had a huge fight with my Dad over his smoking when I saw articles on emphysema, oral cancer... lung cancer was far from the worst that could happen as a result of smoking. It scared me shitless to think of my Dad having to go through that.

Sadly, the fight didn't really result in his quitting immediately - though I'm happy to say he's quit smoking since then.

Trin, MAJOR kudos to you. I'm impressed.

My fiance and I have tried to get his mother to quit for years, but she's so goddamn clingy to the habit - she takes every "maybe you should quit" as if we told her she should go crawl in a shallow grave and just die. She takes is SO personally, and she clings to the habit like its a safety net. I HATE IT. I wish she'd quit. She already has diabetes and is overweight, the smoking can't be helping.

Increase sexual activity, statistics show that this helps.

My sister died of emphysema and/or lung cancer -- it was a toss-up as to which would get her first, and by the time she died, who was counting?

Stick with it. You'll never regret quitting.

Thank you, everyone! It's day 3 and the cravings are the worst they've been yet.

Beebo. That's one of the main reasons I want to quit. I don't want to go through lung cancer/emphysma and I sure don't want to put my family through it. Smoking's just not worth it anymore.

I'll keep everyone posted on the progress. To date, not even one puff. Lord knows I've wanted to though. <3 everyone.

Oh gawd, that's the last thing I need. I'm already a tried and true foodie. Guess I really will have to start exercising soon.

And Daq, you'll quit when you're ready. It took me 27 years and about a dozen tries to finally say enough is enough. I WILL make it this time. I've got a great support group in all of you and my family.

all ya'll. You're making this much easier on me than going it alone.

Day 3 was the worst for me.

It's been almost two years now and I still have mad cravings. 30 years of heavy smoking will do that to you. Fortunately the cravings pass quickly and you can learn to live with them.

Good luck. It took me 10 years and repeated efforts to finally quit. But you know what? People who smoke really smell bad. And if I offended any smokers, tough shit--you smell and there's no getting around it. So if you quit, chances are you won't smell bad any more.

Now if I could just learn to wipe my ass thoroughly....

If you aren't exercising, do do do! I was pretty sedentary before my current job since I traveled mostly by car. But since now I commute (avoiding traffic and parking issues) I do a lot more walking and I'm lugging around a notebook (added weight). Result is I'm getting quite a bit of exercise, a good amount of sweat, and even if sometimes it gets me tired by day's end it's made me feel a lot more energetic on the whole and my body feels a lot better.

Find a way to incorporate exercise into your day without making it feel like you're forced to and it will become much easier.
