Twists and turns of DNA

As a Christmas present, my wife and I bought ourselves DNA tests and I've spent the last few days teasing out some surprises.

About five years ago I'd had a mitochrondrial DNA test through National Geographic, which confirmed my maternal line goes straight back to Oaxaca, Mexico, where my ancestors have lived for approximately the last 10-20,000 years. With the new test I figured I'd come out about 50% British/Scots along with some continental European. My father's name isn't quite as common as Smith or Jones, but it's not too far down from there.

When the results came in, I wasn't too far off in the broad particulars of 80% European, but only 7% of that was Brit. That made me scratch my head because it was so far off from my assumption of a basically British ancestry on the paternal line.

Long story short, after digging back to the 1700s through successive lines, my father's ancestors were a much more varied group than I ever suspected. There's a colonial Jewish branch from South Carolina (where Jews were slave traders) and another branch of Melungeons -- a tri-racial mix of white, Cherokee and black. That probably explains the 1% African which popped in somewhere.

So on both sides of my family I'm native American mixed with Central & Southern European. Plus a few stray Brits.

Has anyone else had a DNA test and been surprised by the results?

I actually want to do a DNA test for my birthday. I know I'd be predominantly West African, but I wanna see all the other bits and pieces too :3

I've been tempted.

I know I have British and Scottish and Cherokee in me, there's probably some German and African in there as well. There might be some surprises though. .

If it got cheap enough I'd be mildly interested in having a DNA test for my husband and myself. My mother seems to have been pure English. She was born there into the peasant class. But all I really know are the names of her parents. I know slightly more about my father's side, I remember vague talk about Alsace-Lorraine. The name could be derived from either an original uncommon French or German one.
I'd love to learn that I am 1% African. According to the one drop rule I'd be as black as anyone lol. I look as white as can be.

I know of Scots, Irish, British (as in Welsh speaking Briton), Norse and Romany ancestry. I daresay there's more.

In fact, I'd go as far as to say there's no "pure" anything as regards ethnicity and race anywhere.

Complete Heinz 57 here, but it would be interesting to see all of the exact data. Mostly Norwegian, followed by German-French also hailing from the Alsace-Lorraine region, Scots-Irish, and finally Sioux.

I would bet that there would be some surprises in there.

If you're of white European descent, send me a fiver and I'll do some research and let you know if you're related to Charlemagne.

Yeah - if it got cheap enough I'd be interested. I know on my dad's side of the family we've got the British isles covered and some German. Though, considering how long the family has been in this country there might be some Native American in there somewhere.

My great-grandfather used to tease Ramoo about looking like an Indian (as in Native American) and she would get so mad about it because in deep south Louisiana you don't want to be anything other than lily-white. But, it doesn't take away that one of her sons was often made to ride the back of the bus. So, I'd like to find out if there was a reason my great-grandfather liked to tease Ramoo about Indian blood.

Let's face it. Two things us humans, as a species, WILL do; travel and have sex. And nothin' gets the ol' juices flowing like traveling, then conquering somebody else's land!

How the hell else do you explain football -- of either variety?

No, given that we interbred with Neanderthals and Denisovans, we often aren't even purebred humans.

Here's a useful comparison chart of the leading DNA tests out there (bearing in mind it's written by one of the competitors).
The Leading Ancestry DNA Tests Compared

FamilyTree DNA (FTDNA) was having a holiday sale so we got two tests for about $60/each. Ancestry also often discounts, too, so keep an eye out for sales. One of my co-workers really liked the 23AndMe test and recommended it, but we went with the test that ties in more to genealogical studies since that's my wife's hobby.

NatGeo's Geno 2.0 and 23AndMe both measure % of Neanderthal DNA. I sooooo wanted that feature, but Geno 2.0 is pricey, so I'm leaving that for another Christmas self-indulgence.

My wife is 100% European with 40% British Isles, but we're pretty sure the 15% Scandinavian is from Viking invaders who marauded on the islands. The majority of her genealogical lines go back to England and Scotland. (Snd yes, even Charlemagne. If you've got even one ancestor who was British nobility/royalty -- and those younger sons really got around in the Old Country and the new colonies -- you're going to trace back to Charlemagne and beyond.)

Not specifically British nobility or royalty. Every living European is a descendent of Charlemagne.

Oh dear. There goes my 5-per-go enterprise; hung by its own petard.

If your wife is British then it's a given she will have patterns unique to Scandinavia in her DNA because the Vikings settled here and reproduced. They are part of the tapestry that makes us British. Likewise, if she has English ancestry then there will be markers associated with the Normans, Anglo Saxons and even Romans. Scottish, Welsh and Irish will almost certainly be in there too due to migration patterns the past few hundred years.

Don't forget that the Romans made it up to the Scottish lowlands, and had forts north of the Antonine too, so all their DNA made it to Scotland too. And of course the Anglo Saxons were in Lothian too, so their DNA also got to Scotland. Then David the 1st of Scotland invited Norman Families to Scotland in exchange for land and titles (Robert the Bruce was from one of those Norman lines) so their CNA also made it to Scotland. Then of course we have the Bretons who arrived alongside the Normans with William whose DNA also got as far north as Scotland. (The Stuarts being the best known bunch, having started out as the FitzAlans).

Oh, and due to the common Roman practices of dispersing Legionaries from the Provinces to serve outside their homelands, and their encouragement of retired Legionaries to settle in the provinces they served in, a lot of that DNA the Romans brought would have been Middle Eastern and North African, Greek, Gaulish, Iberian, Illyrian, Thracian and Armenian, as well as Italian.

Irish mixed with Norman and Norse (same thing technically, if we're being pedantic).

Yes. I would love to find out more, because as far as I know I am Italian/Irish/Cherokee/English/Scottish/French. Lol. According to family and records, that is. I wonder how much of it is accurate and just what else I got in here.

Y'all laugh but I might actually have Charlemagne ancestry. My mother's family is from the countryside around Aachen, where his home was.

But then my mom posited that maybe her family were just Italians who wandered up that way to work in the coal mines in the 1800s. Who knows.

Just scared to take it and find out I'm pure Neanderthal.
