American driving laws question

I've been watching some youtube 'bad driving' videos and I've noticed that, in the American ones, drivers will often go straight through a red light at a crossroads. Is this 'bad driving', or are you allowed to do that if it appears that there's no conflicting traffic on the intersecting road ?

It's very much the former. But a lot of U.S. drivers are of the "if I can get away with it, it wasn't illegal" mindset.

it's an intersection of the law and common sense ... law says you must, common sense says "are you fucking kidding me?"

personally I'm on the side of common sense... no traffic? no cop? no stop.

I have come across this a few times in my 33 years of driving....just me and the light. There have been a couple of times when after checking all directions, I have gone through it.

they passed a law recently in PA that if the light stays red for too long, you can just go.

Not a clue if there is a 'too long' time limit. Common sense will say 'just go after you look to see if there is on coming traffice.' But alas....we lack common sense.

Also, I sit at a red light but I guess that's because we had a horrible accident here where a person pulled out from a stop sign and a cop came flying doing about 85 and side hit them, killing them both and the car bursting in to flames. I don't trust the 'no traffic so I can go on a red light' any more then I feel comfortable pulling on to a main road from a traffic sign. Not around here, anyway. (probably different in larger cities, I don't know)

Years ago, on my typical drive home from work, I sat at a no-right-on-red light for 5 minutes (there was a traffic-cam installed there). My small car wasn't enough to trigger the pressure plate/mag-sensor whatever's under the road. If there even was one in the right-turn-only lane.

After 5 min, I just went... and contacted CalTrans about the intersection being broken.

The no-right-on-red sign was removed by the next night.

Normally though, legal or not, I treat a red light like a stop-sign, if it's the middle of the night and it seems to be unresponsive.

Perhaps you should watch a few of these videos - it would appear to be the #2 cause of crashes after 'tailgating (and usually has far worse consequences)'.

I notice on some of these videos that the red lights controlling the crossings appear to flash - is that for real, or an artefact of the dashcam system ?

Flashing red lights mean "stop then proceed with caution." Same as a stop sign. Late at night in some towns, the stoplights are programmed to go to flashing red both ways, or flashing red one way, flashing yellow (proceed with caution) the other.

A flashing red light is the equivalent of a stop sign. A solid red light is a stop until the light changes. In Ohio bicycles can proceed against a red since they can't trigger sensors but oncoming vehicles still have right of way.

Well, come on. Drivers don't "often" do this - the just do it often on bad driver videos. It's a pretty rare thing, at least where I live and from what I've seen. I mean, it's not like we're those mofos in Russia who drive like every last one of them was born with fetal alcohol syndrome. At least not yet, but if we keep cozying up to the Kremlin, we might begin to mimic their driving, too.

They have traffic cams in the main intersections and those little fuckers have nailed me 3 times for doing a rolling stop on a right turn red light. Argh.

Depending on where you live people go through the red after the yellow all the time. I counted eight cars once after the light changed near where I work.

never had an issue with it... because the first rule is "no traffic". if there's no one about, there's no one to crash into. Nota Bene: "No Traffic" is not the same as ""Unknown Traffic"... if your line of sight is blocked, you don't know.

generally at night smaller cities/towns don't bother with switched signals in low traffic volume areas and just go to flashing, because it holds traffic up less to behave as a general 4-way stop/caution. it's also a safety default for some systems in case of service outage (and also how you're supposed to treat it if they are are completely dead)

I'd be curious to know what region of the country this is. Around here, it just doesn't happen as a rule. When it does, there's finger-wagging and social shaming. Maybe even shunning.

I see you have not visited Redmond, WA, home of, ahem, a well-known computer software company, nor have you enjoyed the friendly environs of any of the many locations of a certain aircraft manufacturer.

Ah, thrilling Seattle, city of suspense, where you have no idea whether the vehicle that ends you will be a Porsche or a jacked-up POS pickup, but you're pretty sure it will be one or the other.

But COME now.. you live in a State where a four way stop sign can become a death trap because no one will go first!

Driver 1: "No, you go on ahead. I think you were here first"
Driver 2: "Oh dear, my goodness no, YOU go first."
Driver 3: "Well, I'll just wait here until you two decide what to do."
Driver 1: "Golly gee, hehe it seems we're at an impasse!"
Driver 2: "Well, I'm not budging, I can sit her all day, please go first?"
Driver 3: "Gracious, I hope they figure it out soon, my paczki's are going stale."
Me: "The FUCK are you assholes sitting around all day for?!! *Zooooooooms thru*

I'm surprised they don't find more skeletons behind the wheel at the four-way stops, ffs.

Panhandle of West Virginia, Maryland and Virgina, where not even a drive-by shooting results in shunning.

That's part of why they passed the law in PA. Plus, I read that a lot of motorcycles are too light also.
