SL Blog: Second Life: Coming Soon in Ten Languages

There’s been a quiet revolution going on, as international Second Life Residents and a small number of Lindens work together to translate tens of thousands of text strings and critical web pages into nine key languages. In another month (depending on QA time) the full viewer will be live in German, French, Korean, and Japanese. [...]

A much needed feature and kudos to the Lab and the international community for making this happen.

Nice job LL.

Oh crap, more incomprehensible IMs. I can't tell who is drunk and who is non-English speaking as it is.

I give the Lab crap, my friend.. but I offer kudos when they are warranted as well.

Now go win that election, I have votes heading your way.

The IMs will be properly translated viewer to viewer yeah? If someone types into their German viewer and the system sends the IM to one English and two Cantonese viewers, the built-in translator will print the strings in proper languages to each yeah? Or if someone using a Spanish viewer comes to Fate Gardens, they'll see my covenant, land description, tree names et cetera in Spanish rather than their native English.

If so, major kudos, that's quite a serious promotion for The Grid All Hail The Central Grid and one time that working with a community of volunteers has been valuable and productive.

If not, LL are just short-sightedly playing with their toys again and marketing to closed groups again with no sense at all of bringing people together, promoting community development and growth, treating people like people.

What?

Nuuu! The viewers themselves will be translated from start to end, every text, every help display, eery combo box.

No real-time translation of IMs or the like

There's lots of JIRA activity with volunteers submitting translations and picking them up.

That's what I thought. I wondered what the hell the IM translation thing was all about and re-read the blog entry twice because I was convinced I'd missed something.

It's taken five years for them to implement application locale settings relevant to large portions of their userbase? That's the big as far as I'm concerned.

They haven't integrated Babelfish into the client, people. lol.

When I read it I didn't read it as they implemented babelfish or the like. Just that the viewers themselves would be in other languages.

To me this is vital. I looked at that Japanese beta for a virtual world someone posted awhile back and the viewer was not in something I could read. It was confusing. The Second Life viewer is a pain to learn to most English native speaking people so I can only imagine how hard it is for another language speaker. Also the part about translating the knowledge base, etc is great.

Was it a long time coming.. oh yeah! This should have been done long ago. But, it is being done so someone at the lab woke up and saw the need.

I think that's just wonderful; absolutely needed (too long in coming, but better late than never!).

I agree. Try changing the locale on your Operating System (whether Windows or Linux) and watch the textual UI elements of most applications get translated into the first language of the relevant country.

It just surprises me that it's taken until 2008 for this to happen with the Second Life viewer... given the international spread of the userbase.
