Cool Forum Feature Guide for New Users

If you are coming from other forum environments, the SLU forums has a lot of highly customized features to add to your experience here. As a new user, many of these features are not necessary apparent, so I wanted to start an ongoing sticky thread to point them out.

Reaction Buttons:

The SLU forums have five custom reaction buttons that allow you to express a reaction to someone's post - it lists the reaction beneath the post, with the names of which users reacted that way. The reactions are Thanks, Laugh, Disagree, Agree and Groan. These buttons appear on each post in a thread (except your own posts), and the buttons disappear as you use them on a post. You can move your mouse over the button to see a description of which reaction it is.

Forum Filter:
You can choose to block out entire forums and all the posts in them by going to User CP and selecting Edit Options. At the very bottom of the options, there is a list of forums - you can select multiple forums to exclude by using the CTRL key and clicking on each one. If you make a mistake, select Reset Exclusions at the top. The forums you exclude will not show up in New Posts, Search, or on the forum listing. They do still show up in iSpy.

Custom Smilies:
While SLU has a large selection of smilies to choose from, you can also add your own private collection of them. To upload your own smilies, go to User CP and select Manage Custom Smilies from the menu - it is in the Miscellaneous group near the bottom. To use a custom smiley in your post, click the Custom link at the top of the smilies list - it will popup and allow you to pick the smiley you want to add by clicking on it. There are no text shortcuts for them. You can add up to 150 custom smilies.

Ignore Thread:
You can ignore individual threads by going into the thread and selecting Ignore Thread from the Thread Tools menu at the top of the first post. You can access threads you have ignored by going into User CP and selecting Ignored Threads from the menu.

Blogs:
A full blog system is integrated into the forums. Each user has their own blog - just click on the Blogs tab. You can comment on other user's blog entries, as well as create your own. You can access your blog and create posts from the Options menu on the side of each blog.

Mood:
You can select a mood to display on your posts and in your profile. To change your mood, select it the upper right section of the page, where it says My Mood: (right below Private Messages).

Hi Cris :-)

When I first registered, I closed a few windows on the forums page to minimize the choices until I got used to everything. Now I can't open them up again using the little + sign on the right. When I press the + sign, it just disappears and doesn't open up. What am I doing wrong?

(I had closed 'Business and Tech, Miscellaneous, and SLU Classifieds...)

Thank you

OK I'm answering myself because I finally found a solution. Maybe I'm the only meathead that this has happened to, but just in case it happens to someone else...

I was using the Dark Skin when I closed some of the forum 'windows'. The little + sign didn't work for me when I wanted to open them up again, (it would just bring me to the bottom of the page). I switched to the Blue Skin and instead of a + sign, there were small arrows. I was finally able to expand 'Business and Tech, Miscellaneous, and SLU Classifieds'. Yay!

I then switched back to the Dark Side, er, Skin. Everything works fine now.

Somehow, I'm thinking this won't happen to anyone else but me...

Did custom smilies go away? I don't see it in the User CP menu.

The option is back again - I have had to recustomize everything after upgrading and I forgot to put it back in.

Bottom right of each posting you see 8 buttons, the last five with emote faces on them. They are, in order: Groan, Laugh, Thanks, Agree, Disagree (which you'll see if you hover over them). One click on any of those will add the appropriate 'comment' from you to that post. This was the first 'tip' Cris mentioned, called "Reaction Buttons".

Envoy

Hey Cris! If I might suggest, maybe you can edit/amend your first post to include instructions on how to use Multi-Quote. I don't use it that often and, as a result, half the time I bang my head on the desk trying to figure out how to make it work again!

Not sure where to ask this noob question, so I'll try here..

Is it possible to put youtube links inside text? Not sure what it's called, hyperlink or hypertext I think - so that rather than automatically embedding the video into my post, it adds clickable text instead... if that makes sense. I can't seem to find it on the options when I post. I see the add link option, but not an option to customise the text people will see.

Thankee!

All you need to do to put a Youtube video in, is just paste the url of the video in your post. No formatting or anything else needed, just paste it in there and it will be automatically embedded.

In order to not have it embed automatically, or to pull the title from the link, you need to uncheck Automatically embed media and Automatically retrieve titles, which are both under Miscellaneous Options underneath your post when you are creating it.

Then, to create the YouTube link with the text you want, type in the title, then select it, click the Insert Link icon on the editor, and put in the URL to the video.

welcome you're in the wrong spot though as you were actually supposed to start a new thread so we could say hello back at you.

I dunno if Cris can move this so it might be better to just saunter over and start one yourself..
