I'm walking...

And I'm looking like everyone else.

So I tried buying a "walk bracelet" and I don't see any different. I still walk the same. Then I found a place selling walk animations, but the animation only runs when I... well run it, and when I stop walking, it keeps... running.

So I know I'm missing this.

On a related note, I think I'm seeing why being an early adopter is a bit painful. I feel like one of those newbs back in IRC that I used to help explain scripting files, and client support to....

Ah, the good old days when I had a clue.

Hi Serenity.
Drop by Linden Lifestyles and pick up their freebies. There are 3 fairly nice hairs, and a box. There is an object in the box you can wear that will make your hips swing. (I am assuming that you are female...)
And welcome to SL/SLU.

Actually I don't mind paying a few L's to have something nice. I'm just struggling to get my head around what goes where and does what.

I love the opensource nature of SL but the freedom it offers also makes it hard to "pick up and play"... or perhaps I know too much of computers to just PUP with what I can, and know too little of SL to make it up as I go along.

Oh.. is there a really good FAQ of things like "walks" and the advanced beginner type questions? I feel like I'm pestering...

Do you have the animation you picked up in a hud? Or are you just hitting play ?

Serenity...what you actually need is something called an Animation Override (AO). There are several freely available on the grid, but perhaps the most reliable is the ZHAO.
The animation you bought is designed to be dropped into an AO, the AO is worn, and replaces your default walking animation.

So...pick up a ZHAO...read the notecard about how to customize it, drop in your animation...and sashay.

That's what that means!

Okay, let me see if I have this though:

AO's force everyone near you to, in addition to downloading your skins and clothing textures to also download the animation script, which adds to their sever lag as well as their processor lag (as the animation has to be applied and is not default) which is why in some crowded areas people call for people to turn of AO's?

That sound right?

Yep. AO's are often the bane of crowded sims for that reason. Unfortunately there's no other way to replace that godawful, retarded default walk.

Hi Serenity and welcome to SL!

A few of my friends put together a "Welcome to SL" gift for me to give out to people during my show. There's a TON of great stuff in there including (in my opinion) one of the most important things for new people - instruction notecards that tell you in plain English how to do many things in SL like wearing and using attachments and stuff.

If you IM me in-world I'd be happy to pass teh folder on to you!

What gets frustrating is that I get a LOT of what's going on. I can do things like change clothes, modify them, adjust them, reassign them etc. I've got that dangerous middle range of "a little bit of knowledge is a bad thing".

But I WILL be looking you up, though I might be on my "other" avatar when I do... Serenity Westland.

Serenity (luv the name!),

If you feel like investing a bit for your animations, I recommend the Huddles Animator Deluxe HUD. This little wonder will store AO sets, dance animations, particle effects, and landmarks in one convenient Heads Up Display. It has a lot of nice features, and is probably the most used item in SL I've ever purchased.

Just do a Search for "Huddles" in Places on SL, and you should find their store.

I have a HUDDLES and use it for everything except walk and run. For walk and run I use an on screen from CGBG that can be turned off from the HUD
