| Two Accounts? Two questions: 1) Is it poor form to have two accounts for the same user? 2) How hard is it to mange general life in SL and more "adult" life? I'm starting to wonder if I should have a second account (if you're allowed) rather than having stalkers IM'ing me alot, but if I'm going to do that I want to get it going now so it's not such a burden to start "over". I find something new and interesting, log out, log in #2 and snag it... Or is it possible to live a double second life? Serenity |

| It's commonly done, for a variety of reasons - from needing a second account to test scripts & permissions without bugging friends every time to roleplaying elaborate multiple personalities. A second account costs nothing nowadays, so why not make one right away if you think you'll need one. The only thing I'd consider "poor form" would be to re-friend you current friends with the new account without telling them it's you. But using a secondary account to experiment with the more, um, racy side of SL is totally ok I think. |

It is quite common to have a second avatar (referred to as an alt), and not all that uncommon to have 3 or even 4. Some people create them as testing alts for content creation, others to form a group for land acquisition, and then there is the desire for discretion as well. So one avatar is the responsible public face of your Second Life, and an alt can travel in the less... respectable... areas. ![]()

My Mood: | Alt accounts are my test dummies for my stuff and for maintaining my personal group name. Well except for one who I might choose to turn into a sometimes roleplayed character. As for double life? Nah. My main is kinda like an additional half-life for me. It's not a fully double life since it's not a separate personality.

![]() Either out your alt to all your friends or avoid running in the same social circles. It's the overlap without disclosure that is considered to be deception and poor ethics. Everyone who is a Friend of my first SL account knows that I also run Beebo (who began as a testing alt). Although, at this point, my poor main only has about 5 Friends.

My Mood: | Well, let's not forget to show the flip side of alts, however. A lot of negativity gets heaped on the concept, as people use multiple alt accounts for griefing, cheating in financial transactions, content theft, etc. And there's also the fun forum game of "Who Are You An Alt Of?", where (for example) anyone who disagrees with He Who Must Neva Be Named is actually an alt account of Aimee/Josh/Flip/Cris/Al Gore. I definitely think you need at least more than one account to really experience Second Life. Just don't be surprised if you get some eye-rolling when discussing alts...none of 'em have very good reps.

My Mood: | I've got more alts than I can remember at this point: some are for testing, some act as bank accounts, some are there for back up, some are there for the pure fun of the name. ![]()

My Mood: | I made an alt once, to be able to have a group for a land deed in Neualtenburg. I have forgotten her last name though. *blush* I wonder how I could find it out? Otherwise I have no alts (and obviously never played that one), but I know lots of people who do and it seems like there are a ton of great reasons to have one. ![]()

My Mood: | I've often thought it would be fun to have a guy alt. But I have enough trouble getting enough time as Beathag, without trying Beathan as well. ![]() But I would definitely either "out" myself to my friends, or move in very different social circles.

My Mood: | I never wanted to have an alt. I dislike the general concept. But I was left with no choice when my account got suspended on (false) allegations of being underage. I was left for 2 weeks without my main account (WarKirby Magojiro), til I could actually get hold of a linden to find out what was wrong. I was forced to create an alt then, and WarKirby Zenovka was born. At the time, I thought someone had hacked my account. Mr Zenovka got banned within 20 minutes for merely existing. Presumably linked by IP adress. Then I had a friend create WarKirby Watanabe, using different details and such, he survvived, and 2 weeks later, I got my main back. Now, WarKirby Watanabe is purely for testing permissions, and being a victim of whatever diabolical devices I create. I don't use anything other than my main 90% of the time. I'm not sure what became of Zenovka. Never really tried to log in again since. Not sure I can even remember the password |

My Mood: | I promised some friends of mine that if ever I bring my alt (the one for roleplay) to the mainstream I want them to try and spot that it's me behind the roleplaying. They should be able to, but I dunno. |

You can drop them on your alt's profile even if it's offline. But don't try to transfer too much in one go, it might overflow.

| Max is 20 items. I uhm.. noticed that recently. They will be capped and you lose all no copy items. My suggestion, unless its clothing which is in neat files, box up everything "Furniture, Gestures, Animation, Landscape" all into separate boxes. Once you get to a decent amt of boxes, say 10, box THOSE into one box like "Inventory 1" and so on. Then when you get to 10.. box that into 1. Etc. |

@Original poster: I used to use alts to "get away" in terms of my circle of friends and SL family, but that's really not practical for me anymore. I also don't really 'roleplay' in SL. I mean, I'm really just me, no matter what avatar I'm using. I do have a verified business alt, though, whom I use for building and decorating and occasional rental work. She only has 2 people in her friends list, and that's only because the 'modify my objects' ability requires that the person be in your list.

But she retains control of all landscaping items and textures. Which means she owns the Svarga bat rezzer. That disparity is a bone of contention to this very day.

My Mood: | I too have several alts that I use mostly for role play and stalking errr I mean…umm group land. Anyway sometimes it’s just nice to return to the quiet anonymity I once enjoyed as a newbie and have no interrupting IMs. I have two alts that are female, and one of those I keep on one of the non- public Orientation Islands to help the newbies out. I do highly recommend creating at least one alt of the opposite gender, just for the experience. I really get a kick out of running multiple sessions of SL at the same time, and have held conversations with people who had no idea it was the same person running both avatars. Once me and an old girl friend of mine had 4 alts each on at the same time. One of her neighbors came over and had no idea that only two people were controlling 8 avatars. ![]()
