Noob question, Ch. 3: Looking at high stuff

This is probably a stupid question, but as that is my specialty I will continue to hone my craft:

When you are shopping and there are displays way, way up high, how do you see the detail? The only thing I have found is to fly and then mouselook, but this usually results in me flying up through the ceiling, into the display, down sideways, or otherwise looking like a drunken bat. There must be an easier way, right?

Thanks!

Use your camera controls to move around. Your avie stays still but your cam will move about.

What Vertigo said, but some stores will have displays that aren't visible until you physically get close to them -- Deviant Kitties is one (their display reads "Move closer to see color options" or something similar).

If you encounter one like that, you really have no choice but to fly closer.

You can scan round using the camera controls - You can find these on the View Menu in the client - there are plenty of keyboard shortcuts as well . Have a look here

You can zoom, rotate and pan your camera. Try holding down CTRL and using the arrow keys on your keyboard. Also, you can zoom very easily with the mouse. Hold down the ALT key and the left mouse button and move your mouse forward or back to zoom in and out on stuff - holding downl CTRL and SHIFT with ALT allows you to rotate and pan your view also. There is a camera control window you can bring up as well that has arrows on it you can click to zoom, rotate and pan. I'm not in world at the moment so I forget which menu it is on, but it should say Camera Controls or something like that.

When you are in stores with huge walls, the easiest thing is to fly and then zoom a bit if you need more detail.

Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate the suggestions and info and will try the camera control things.

So follow-up: If things are so high up you need to fly, is there a way to adjust the sensitivity of the "page up" and "page down" buttons? That may not be the right way to say it, but when I page up to fly to the very high objects I often overshoot into the ceiling, so then I page down - gently, tiny tap - and shoot down past the object. Is there a way to make the movements smaller?

Thanks again.

I have always used the E and C keys to go up and down while flying. See if that helps at all - I never have any problem but that may be because I am so used to the controls at this point.

Take the time to learn the camera controls. Once you do, your experience will open up completely!

You can also hit control+alt+D and go to DISABLE CAMERA CONSTAINTS - highly recommended.

Thanks, Cristiano.

I didn't know E and C do the same as the page buttons. I will try them and see if it the buttons or if it is me. (I'm betting $100 Lindens it is me - I'm still not used to the controls at this point. )

Thanks, Flipper. "Disable Camera Constraints"? Nope, didn't know about that one either and I"m not even sure what it means. I'm beginning to think that instead of knowing nothing about SL I actually have negative knowledge.

Plus - on the camera thing if you hold your mouse over an object and hold down the alt key while left clicking the object your camera is targeted to that object. Then using the camera controls you can zoom in using the + sign in the middle bar.

Thanks, Circle. I think that is yet another thing I had no idea about. According to my rough estimate, that makes it unknown thing number # 752.

This is the kind of information I wanted from the Q and A, and not so much about freaking. Thanks for everyone's help!

This is leading to the biggest noob questions of all. I've wanted to ask these for a while, but I didn't want to look like a complete idiot. Now that I have passed that point , I guess I will ask.

How much of SL activity is sex-based? Are most people who look like animals making their avatars for animal-based sex? Do a lot of people use SL simply to cyber? And is most of the stuff at Grendel's Children for sexual use? [ETA: CRAP! I am taking out part of this for reasons that I tried to explain and then realized I was causing the same problem. So some of this will make less sense than before. I didn't think about this earlier. Crap!] I also had a club owner who was SO nice, but when I think back on our conversation I wonder if he was wanting to start some sort of cyber relationship. I have the same questions about a guy a met at a class even though I made it clear to him - I thought - that cybering or an online relationship is not something I want.

I don't care at all what two or more adults - in whatever shape or species - say/do to/with/on each other. But it is not something I"m interested in. I have been painfully naive online in the past and ended up in some stupid messes. I would like not be such an incredible idiot in SL, although it may be inevitable.

I am not very worldly in many ways I know and often very literal and earnest in text conversations. And while I know about some of these practices, I often am naive about the intentions of people and how to interpret what they say. IRL it is much easier, with eye contact and body language. Online, I think I miss something.

Aside from the questions above, has anyone else had this problem? Or suggestions about not getting into these awkward situations?

There's sex in SL. Not that much, however, when you look at the big picture. There's a really wide variety too - our pal Stroker could give you a better answer then me, however.

It just gets a ton of the press.

I'll leave it for people more knowledable to discuss the furries, but it's my impression a lot of them are not there to yiff, but those who do are sometimes very odd. I wouldn't think there is any pressure to do things that you wouldn't want to (after all, you can just tp out or log off if it gets weird.) I'm not the least bit interested in pixelbumping, and it's never been an issue.

No. They're doing it because you can be anything in SL, because they identify with that animal for some reason, because they like the way it looks, because it's fun...really, for any number of reasons.

lol, I've never heard Grendel's associated with SL sex before.
