I didn't really know that much detail about SL before I joined. I had heard about for a while, but didn't pay much attention. I had played MMOs before, so I did know that avatars + internet = cybering for some. The gaming people I know would rather play FPSs or MMOs than SL so they never talked about it. Only 1 said that they thought SL was basically a gathering place for unending avatar orgies. But I think this is more a showing of his fantasy life than his knowledge of SL.

The only person who warned me against SL was my dad, which is kind of funny. He has known about SL from a business perspective since it was getting started. He basically asked me, in a very kind way, not to be too stupid with guys in SL.

As for the variety, I'm sure there's plenty.

That's good to know, Charlemagne. I thought furries were all about having sex while looking like an animal and that is it. So whenever I have seen a giant furry whatever walking around I thought that was what they were looking for.

I swear it is ignorance and not that I have an incredibly dirty imagination!! Maybe!!

I guess when I saw all the horse/pony and furrie stuff I thought it was associated with sex b/c I didn't realize people used these costumes for other reasons....With each of my replies I think I am beginning to sound more and more like a sex-crazed nut.

Eh, furries don't seem to be worse/better than humans. The type you run into depends on where you go.

Hey, I was a little weirded out by the furries when I started too, and now I'm related to them.

I look at it this way: When we're kids, we pretend to be all sorts of things, from astronauts to zebras...SL is just the adult continuation of that. And, yes, there is pretty naturally some more traditional 'adult content' as well, but it isn't the focus for most people.

With the exception of a group of people I met through a very kind woman, all of my friends are guys. One I never hear from. Half are just nice people. And some are becoming weird problems that I am not good at handling.

I am not good at asking people to emotionally step away (I can't think of another way of putting it ) as making people feel bad makes me feel horrible. And usually there has been a string of misunderstandings that went unnoticed by me so the person feels like I lead them along and then betrayed them, not just rejected. Part of it is, I think, a receptive communication problem on my part, part of it is people not hearing what they don't want to hear, and part of it is me being a clueless dork at times.

I guess I need to gather up my guts. I will try to take care of these things before they get messier.

Ok, that took me way too long to figure out. I almost asked who was Vag. That is one question I am deeply happy I did not ask.

Really, I don't care what others do. It doesn't change my view of them either - we all have our twisted little bits, but some of us are more comfortable showing them than others. And if I saw others doing whatever with whomever I wouldn't care. It's just not something I want to do, and I tend to blunder into these odd situations b/c I'm clueless. Really, really clueless, I now realize.

That's a good comparison, Ann.

The info from you and Charlemagne helped put it in a different light. I think I mistook a lot of things, not just furries, but I had only heard of "furries" in a sexual context.

I really love horseback riding and horses (in this thread I feel compelled to say the relationships have been strictly professional or platonic

SL has all kinds, since there are far fewer societal restraints (I still reserve the right to orbit people with talking pregnancy bellies, though). What one does in SL shows a great deal about their character, to some degree, but one is free to be whatever they want, regardless. The avatar is perhaps a purer form of expression, since it is nearly hundred-percent customizable.

Nah, the only way to have negative knowledge is to have wrong knowledge. Like thinking you knew what "Disable Camerea Constraints" meant and didn't go near it because it thought it meant that your screen would be dark, unable to see anything because you have disabled your camera.
